Real Russia Video Blog has been launched in 2012 by “Sergey x 2″ as they are called – Sergey Baklykov and Sergey Pichugin – the two enterprising young men from the city of Ufa, the capital of Russia’s autonomous Republic of Bashkortostan.

Feeling tremendous dissatisfaction with the misunderstanding and misrepresentation of Russia in the West, they decided to start a Youtube channel entitled REAL RUSSIA, in which they endeavored to document the true Russian life as is, without any propaganda, embellishments or editing.

Being in complete agreement with Sergey x 2, I also do my best to dispel such misconceptions and enlighten my readers. Read my various articles about Russia on this blog. I also write truthfully and extensively about Russian turbulent history and its ever-changing present in my books GOLD TRAIN (Accidental Spy Russia Adventure) and my new release, THE EARTH SHIFTER. Both books can be purchased on Amazon by clicking on above title links.

Back in 2012, I promised my friends at the Real Russia Channel to share their entertaining and educational videos with my friends and followers. However, with all the other events and timely topics, this idea has since been on hold. I’m now taking this opportunity to deliver on my promise.

Map of Russia Baikal Ufa Meteor

A word about Russia and Bashkortostan: The Russian Federation is the most multicultural country in the world, consisting of approximately 100 different nationalities and ethnic groups – widely different, large and small! Because of that, there is a number of autonomous regions and small republics, which form part of the federation.

Bashkortostan is one of them. It is located in the Ural Mountains, about 1000 km east of Moscow. The Ural Mountains serve as a perfect vertical divider between Europe and Asia, and this is visible in the composition of the population of that region. As you’ll see from the videos, the population is very mixed, about 50% Russian/Slavic and 50% Bashkir, an Asian ethnicity speaking Bashkir language, which together with Mongolian, Tibetan and Tatar is part of the Turkic family of languages (not to be confused with Turkish language).

A Bashkir woman in traditional costume

Bashkortostan is known for its oil deposits. There are two dominant religions: Russian Orthodox (Christian) and Muslim (Bashkir). The autonomous republic has its own flag, anthem and government. The signs in the republic are in both Russian and Bashkir, as these are the two state languages. The everyday language is primarily Russian, although Bashkir is studied in schools alongside Russian.

One of the things that strike me while watching these real life vids, is how well the two very different ethnicities and religions get along in Bashkortostan! They tend to intermarry, embracing both cultures as their own. This tends to be the way of life in most such Russian regions, where the Russian culture is embraced as the national culture, yet local roots are celebrated equally. If only the rest of the world learned to live like that!

As you see, this small and remote republic is somewhat different from the heart of Russia, and from the image many in the West have of this country, but according to Sergei x 2 team, this is the true Russia!

I will certainly agree with our dynamic duo. The Russian culture spiced up with a distinctive multicultural mix, the typical everyday living, common history, and the new and exciting developments, all make Ufa into a charming and fascinating destination.

By the way, remember the recent meteor incident in Russia? Guess what, the City of Ufa and the Republic of Bashkortostan neighbor directly the Chelyabinsk region, where the meteor shower took place, as seen on the map of Russia above. Watch eyewitness vids: The Earth Shifter Plot Playing Out in Real Time: Massive Meteor Rocks Russia.

On map: Chelyabinskaya Oblast (Chelyabinsk region) located to the east of Bashkortostan, in the westernmost part of Siberia.

The vids below show Russian life as is, without smoothing out any rough spots. The presenter speaks pretty decent English and the vids are entertaining, as well as educational at best. This is post one of my new Real Russia video series. Below, I’ve included several of the best videos, courtesy Sergey x 2, in which you can experience the everyday life in this Russian province as well as its Soviet past. Presenting: THE REAL RUSSIA!

Episode 1: Welcome to Real Russia! It includes: Sergey Baklykov’s old Soviet clunker; driving on the Ufa roads; Ufa’s lovely city center, including its main artery, the Lenin Street; a look at the both Sergeys apartments (warning: not for the faint of heart, ahem…ahem… ;) ).

..

Episode 2: Russian Parks. This charming episode is a must watch! Growing up in Russia, I loved the local parks, and watching this vid brings back my most cherished childhood memories. Unlike the trendsetting capitals of Moscow and St.Petersburg, in some ways, Ufa still has one foot in its Soviet past, although the new sprouts are visible everywhere.

Note: in the 1990s, most streets, parks and other locations with Soviet names in such large, trendsetting cities as Moscow, St. Petersburg & Odessa have been given back their old historic names. In St. Petersburg’s case, the whole city was renamed from Leningrad back to its original Saint Petersburg. Unlike most large central cities possessing their own old and rich history, Ufa is a relatively young place, built up during Soviet times. Hence, their preservation of the Soviet names, as in Lenin Street & Communist Street. They certainly made peace with their history. The new and the old blended together as one – works for me!

..

Episode 5: Russian Public Transport. The Russian public transportation system is very well structured, comprehensive and well-oiled. Ufa, where the guys are from, doesn’t have the famous Russian Metro, which is a preferred method of getting around major cities like Moscow & St. Petersburg. For more on the Russian Metro, complete with awesome pics, see my post, Amazing Russian Metro.

This is an excellent episode in which we can experience the old-world charm of the very affordable Russian trams, trolleybuses and buses, as well as the shared taxi service called “Gazelle” – live! Also, something that’s very traditional in Russia and other former Soviet states, but inconceivable elsewhere: a tram/bus conductor carrying around bagfulls of cash, and amazingly, it doesn’t occur to anyone to steal all that money!

..

More about the Russian public transport and its history: Gold Train May Day Interview and The World of Russian Trains and My Childhood Memories.

Episode 18: Traditional Soviet Communal Apartment. A communal apartment is a purely Soviet phenomenon, born of housing shortage and a well-intentioned, but misguided, drive to equalize the living standards of the rich and poor by making everyone’s life miserable. Now a relic of the past, it was a shared apartment, where a family occupied one, two or three rooms privately, while sharing all other areas. Typically, there was one shared entrance, kitchen (usually with multiple stoves and tables), bathroom and corridor.

It is ironic and fascinating that communal apartments were only possible on the posh and fashionable streets of the richest and most popular cities, such as Moscow, St. Petersburg and Odessa.  Incidentally, I describe in detail the history and realities of the Moscow communal apartment living in my new fantasy/thriller THE EARTH SHIFTER. Check it out!

As Sergey x 2 have discovered, there really were no communal apartments in Ufa, since it wasn’t in the category of the most desirable and fashionable cities. Therefore, they had to get creative. They found a way to demonstrate the communal living realities via an episode from the recent Russian musical movie, Stilyagi (1998), which describes the communal life in a 1940s Moscow blue collar apartment.

I’ve never lived in a communal apartment, but some of my friends and relatives did, and I must say, this episode is super-entertaining (a great song too), but generally, communal life I’d observed was much more civilized than shown (of course, I’ve only been to the 1970s-80s communal apartments occupied by intelligentsia). In most cases, there were no more than 2 or 3 families sharing such a place. Oftentimes, these apartments were lavishly decorated and well maintained, with tall ceilings, beautiful details and extra-large rooms and kitchens. So, the view here is sensationalized; still, this is a rather fascinating slice of the Soviet life circa 1940s/WWII and a mesmerizing movie scene, which I highly recommend!

..

Check out my new release, THE EARTH SHIFTER, for fascinating, colorful, poetic, shocking and unforgettable episodes from Russian and Siberian history, as well as today’s events! More about the book, including blurb, excerpts, fave themes and characters!

Auspicious Chinese New Year of the Snake Celebration

Chinese New Year of the Water Snake starts on February 10, 2013, at the new moon. As usual, the celebrations last for fifteen days, until the next full moon. Such long celebration period provides many awesome opportunities to welcome the auspicious energy of the year ahead. Chinese New Year Celebration is as different from the Western one as it gets, yet the idea is the same: saying goodbye to the old year and ushering in the new year in style and with good cheer.

A Recipe for a Successful & Auspicious Chinese New Year Celebration:

1. Colors to wear. Traditionally for the Chinese New Year, you should dress in red. Red symbolizes the ultimate color of energy, beauty – and fire. It is the color that energizes everything it touches. Red is especially great for women. Gold jewelry is very good as generally, the New Year colors are red and gold. Men can dress in red, or blue, as blue is the color of water, money and career success.

As this is the Year of the Water Snake, and water colors are blue and black, you can also wear one of these colors to usher in the new energy. If wearing black (I personally adore black), try to accessorize with reds, blues and jewelry, to add more yang energy.

2. Celebrate with a wonderful spread and lots of prosperous foods on the table, even if you have a small family or are alone. Such auspicious table is a symbol and a signal to the Universe that you are ready to start the New Year of success and prosperity.

New Year Meal

3. Share the joy of the Holiday with family and friends. Friends at the dinner table bring in the yang energy and happiness.

4. Invite symbols of prosperity into your home. These include money trees, auspicious bamboo, persimmons, mandarins and oranges, and of course, Gods of Wealth and Prosperity. I have lots of various symbols of prosperity in my home.

5. Creating a wealth vase is always a great idea. If you already have one, be sure to refresh it for the New Year! Interestingly enough, wealth vases are extremely popular not only in China but also in Tibet, where the Buddhist monks conduct very elaborate ceremonies to consecrate them. Pretty fascinating stuff!

wealth-vase

6. Fill the red prosperity envelopes (also called red Chinese packets) with auspicious money and Chinese coins, and keep them in your wallet so you never run out of money.

Red Packets

7. Clean up the house and do all of your laundry in advance to get rid of the old energy and free up the space for the new.

8. The above are all the do’s. Ah, and here is the dreaded don’t! Don’t work on the first day of the Chinese New Year, don’t do any cleaning, repairs, or god forbid, vacuuming or sweeping with the broom on that day, as it’s considered extremely inauspicious – akin to sucking out or sweeping away all your wealth and prosperity. (Note, this rule applies only to the first day of the celebrations.)

But what if I have to work on the first day of the Chinese New Year, you ask? Well, if you have to, you have to. Just do your best, perhaps designating a different day for celebration instead. The NYC Chinatown merchants routinely do just that because all of their customers want to celebrate. Restaurants and shops are full and they have to make money while they can. I know some of the  Chinatown merchants, and they are telling me that they have to work despite the traditional taboo. But luckily for most of us, this Chinese New Year starts on a Sunday! Yay!

Once, a roof repairman showed up at my house just on the first day of the Chinese New Year despite the fact that I specifically warned him not to come on that date. Alas, as it usually happens in such cases, he mixed up the dates. I had to tell him to leave asap and come back some other day. You can imagine the look on his face!

I am currently at my Catskills residence and my family is in NYC. We will be celebrating together in a week or so, when I join them in the City. But I’m still preparing a cozy little celebration of the New Year’s Eve. I baked a VERY HEALTHY cake and prepared auspicious salmon. I also made some of my Dragon Pearl jasmine tea in my Snake Tetsubin teapot (very appropriate for this year!). Yum! I invited a local friend to help me celebrate, while I finish up my business here before heading to NYC. By the way, I’ve taken some iPhone pics of my little Chinese New Year’s spread and I’ll post them on my blog just as soon as I figure out how to upload them. Or, most likely, I’ll wait for my wiz of a husband to do it for me. ;)

Stay tuned, much more coming your way!

Wishing everyone a very Happy Chinese New Year of the Water Snake!

The Earth Shifter Mystical Setting: A Walk Through Manhattan

You may have read my post about Sacred Lake Baikal, Siberia. This is post two in The Earth Shifter Mystical Setting series. Last Thanksgiving we took a fabulous walk around Manhattan, NY, visiting The Village and Hell’s Kitchen, where part of The Earth Shifter action takes place. It is the location of Red’s Underworld Club with the secret entrance into the real, honest-to-goodness Underworld. ;) While depicting Underworld Club I drew on my real Manhattan experiences and observations.

It was dusking, still I couldn’t resist taking some pics with my iPhone since the setting was so right. Judge for yourself!

We are walking towards Hell’s Kitchen. Only in Manhattan! A weird, narrow “wedge” building next to Madison Park. This building is usually referred to as the “Flat Iron” and I think it goes so well with Red’s theme.

I thought this was sooooo Red! This building and the amazing colors as they came out on my iPhone camera reminded me of Red’s Underworld castle as I imagined it.

IMG_0033

In reality, this is a church…

IMG_0040

IMG_0037

A very progressive church. The sign says: “Organ Meditation,” which to me is also soooo Red.

We are walking through Greenwich Village, which we call simply “the Village.”

This could be Red’s motorcycle. ;)

I love the detail on the Village buildings.

IMG_0054

There are so many hidden gems here, which are easy to overlook, but if you have a keen eye, you are in for a treat. Illuminated with the surreal light of the dusk, these pictures remind me of Red’s Underworld castle and garden.

IMG_0053

IMG_0052

Red is one of the coolest characters in the book, and this is her world!

IMG_0047

By the way, I structured the book in such a way that Red’s real identity remains an enigma till almost the very end. I dare you to guess what she really is while reading the book! But no spoilers, please!

IMG_0048

Ah, finally, Hell’s Kitchen!

IMG_0010

These sentinel-like iron guards also remind me of Red’s Underworld Night Club.

IMG_0003

Hell’s Kitchen is nothing like it used to be!

From The Earth Shifter:

On Friday, Kei met Red at the corner of 47th Street and 9th Avenue. She wore skinny jeans, high heels, and a sleeveless black tunic with sequined accents, which highlighted her dark hair and eyes, and made her look positively ravishing.

“We are going to an underground night club, fittingly called Underworld,” she explained. Kei didn’t care whether they were going to Underworld, or to the end of the world. He was ready to follow her anywhere.

The Hell’s Kitchen area of Manhattan was once where prostitutes, drug addicts and other rather unsavory characters found refuge because it was cheap. Now of course, the entire Manhattan was so gentrified that even here you wouldn’t find a shoe-box-sized apartment for less than $3,500 a month.

It was only 6:30 p.m. and still early by the nightclub goers’ etiquette. Red knocked three times on a nondescript, metal door painted dark brown, which was buried in a walk-down. At eye level, the door had a small window with jail-like grates. There was movement behind the door and the non-smiling face of a burly dude, who belonged in a Pro Wrestling rink, appeared behind the grates.

“We are cl…,” he started. Suddenly, his expression changed and he hurriedly opened the door, muttering apologetically, “Yes, of course, come in, come in—welcome, my Lady.”

“Thank you, Heraldo,” Red replied regally, making her way past the huge bouncer. Kei followed, throwing cautious glances at the towering mountain of muscle guarding the door.

“I am actually not of age…yet,” admitted Kei when they were safely out of the bouncer’s earshot.

“Not to worry,” said Red, smiling. “It’s covered.”

At this hour, the bar was still dark with only a couple of people sitting in high chairs with drinks in their hands. There was no one else—not even a bartender—around. The whole place gave out the air of forlornness typical of nightclubs before patrons pile in and the show begins.

“Light, please,” said Red into thin air, making herself comfortable at a tiny table for two, located not too far from the dance floor.

The moment she finished her sentence, the candles set in whimsical cast iron candle holders burst into flame around them, giving the space an immediate feeling of mystery and magic.

“My Lady, what an honor to serve you!” A slick waiter, dressed all in black with white gloves, materialized in front of them with a bow. “What can I offer my beautiful queen and her handsome prince?”

“You are such a joker, Emmanuel,” murmured Red. “The usual—for two.”

“Of course, my Lady.” He melted into darkness, as if he never existed.

“Wow,” said Kei. “What is this place? They haven’t even asked for my ID, and they treat you like a queen…”

“Do you like it?”

“Yeah, it’s great, but how is that possible? You are no more than twenty, right?”

“Something like that,” said Red, smiling serenely.

“Then, how come they know you so well here? Are you a celebrity of some sort? Should I know you? Of course,” Kei continued his monologue, “of course, how silly of me! You must be a celebrity—just look at you! You are so beautiful. I am just surprised I can’t remember you from a movie or a magazine.”

“Let’s eat, shall we,” replied Red with a mysterious smile, as a whole procession of servers, directed by Emmanuel, brought out their dinner.

Somehow, the table they sat at started expanding to accommodate all the dishes being laid out before their eyes. Kei closed his eyes, and rubbed them vigorously. When he opened them again, everything seemed back to normal.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel was describing the bounty on the table. “Exquisite eggplant caviar—goes wonderfully with the Russian pancakes; fresh vegetarian pate—just in from our French suppliers; artichoke and olive salad; assorted cheeses from Holland, France and Greece; guacamole and rainbow-hummus platter, created by our chef especially for you; Middleastern salad; jasmine basmati rice with pine nuts, and of course…,” with these words Emmanuel conjured a large carafe filled with dark red liquid, solemnly placing it on the table. “Fresh from the vines of Tuscany, just as you like it, my Lady.”

Kei’s eyes widened. Having grown up in a Chinese family, he never tried wine before. At sixteen, he still had much to learn about the world around him.

“Very nice, Emmanuel, you’ve outdone yourself,” said Red approvingly.

The waiter and the servers bowed and vanished into the darkness.

“Let’s begin, shall we?” said Red. “I am starving.”

“Wow, this is quite a spread,” commented Kei. “Wine, my Lady?” He tried to sound mature while picking up the carafe to pour some wine into Red’s goblet.

“Yes, please,” she said with the same smile, pushing her goblet closer to Kei. She had to reach all the way to the middle of the table to do so, and again, Kei got a distinct feeling that the table was actually much larger than it visually appeared.

He chased the thought away, preparing to pour the beautiful dark liquid into Red’s goblet, and hoping—praying—that he’d be able to handle the wine.

“It’s actually not wine—it’s grape juice, from the best vines of Tuscany,” she explained in response to his unspoken fears.

“Oh…” Kei’s hand twitched and he spilled a drop of dark red liquid. The drop kept expanding, forming a blood-red stain on the snow-white tablecloth.

Red glanced at the drop, and then back at Kei. “I’m really not much of a drinker, and you are not of age yet.”

“Right,” said Kei, inadvertent relief spreading through his veins. He confidently poured the juice into goblets. No more spillage.

In the near future, I am planning posts about other Earh Shifter settings, including Moscow (Tverskaya and Moscow University), Princeton, NJ, Battery Park City and New York Chinatown. I’ll be filming Chinese New Year in Chinatown and will post it both here and on my Youtube channel. Stay tuned!

EARTH SHIFTER MASTER

If you’ve had a chance to check out THE EARTH SHIFTER excerpts on this blog, you may be wondering about the book’s setting, which includes: Moscow; Sacred Lake Baikal, Siberia; New York Chinatown; Princeton, NJ; as well as mystical realms of Heaven and Earth. Today’s post is about one and only Lake Baikal, where every view is picture-perfect.

THE EARTH SHIFTER: meet Sasha’s friend, the adorable Filya the Seal!

From THE EARTH SHIFTER

Earlier today, after some hiking in taiga, they performed a shamanic ritual at Tengis’s sacred site, called the Shaman Rock. After that, as golden rays of the warm summer sun started giving way to the coolness of the silvery moon, they decided to camp out in the Bay of the Seals on Baikal’s majestic shore. The seals enjoyed sunning on the gleaming rocks that wrapped the hidden bay. Sasha had just finished having a chat with her favorite local inhabitant, Filya the Seal.

“Good catch today,” Filya informed her telepathically, languorously exposing his shiny wet body to the sun’s fading rays. “You’ve got to dive very deep into the sea to get the best fish. If you want, Sasha, I can bring you some next time,” he offered, looking at her adoringly with that cute, cat-like face of his. As the last ray of the waning sun pierced the water, Filya dove back into the lake, undoubtedly to find a nice, cozy spot in which to slumber.

The sea… Just like local humans, Filya regarded Lake Baikal as the sea. Perhaps it was part of his genetic memory. The endemic population of seals in the land-locked Baikal was an enigma, one of the many mysteries of this place. The scientists postulated that seals probably swam from the ocean during the Ice Age and stayed here. Kind of like American Indians, indigenous Siberians, who in the long by-gone era had walked across the narrow sleeve of frozen water between the two continents, the one we now call the Bering Strait and subsequently made their home in the vast lands now called the Americas.

From THE EARTH SHIFTER

Both Maxim and Sasha couldn’t wait to get out of Moscow and submerge into Siberia’s untouched wilderness. While packing, Sasha had a persistent feeling that something very important was awaiting her there. Today was June 29, their sixth day on Lake Baikal.

“So quiet.” Maxim broke the silence. “Beats the city every time.”

“It’s another world,” Sasha echoed. “Peaceful.” Just as she finished her sentence, she noticed two gleaming yellow eyes staring straight at her from the darkness of the trees.

EARTH SHIFTER MASTER

THE EARTH SHIFTING News:

Dear readers and fans, due to the busy Holiday Season, both my distinguished editor and my fabulous book formatter have requested a bit more time to finesse all the details. Aww, well, since the end of the world on 12/21/12 will be postponed anyway ;) , and since the most important thing in any book is quality, I have made a decision to release THE EARTH SHIFTER a little later than originally anticipated.

Therefore, the new ebook release date is December 31, 2012. “Just don’t panic, it’s not the end of the world, so to speak,” as my editor so aptly reminded me. ;)

I did like the original release date of 12/22/12 very much, due to the peak of the Galactic Center alignment on that day. Read more about this rare and fascinating event in my previous post. However, according to my editor, the last week of the year very few people read books; they are more likely to take active vacations. On the other hand, come New Year’s, the readers will be primed and ready to fill with awesome new reads all the Nooks, Kindles and Tablets they’ve received for the holidays. We shall see soon enough how right she is!

Till then, enjoy Excerpt 2:

THE EARTH SHIFTER

EXCERPT 2

Chapter 2

2011, Lake Baikal, Russia

Sasha Elfimova could hardly be called a normal teenager. She always preferred the serene majesty of Lake Baikal in southeastern Siberia to the hustle and bustle of Moscow. What’s more, she had powers—incomprehensible and scary powers. She was a Time and Mind Shifter, yet even her mentor, the famous Siberian shaman Tengis, didn’t know how far her powers would develop when the time came…

Sasha dipped her hand in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Baikal, now gleaming seductively in the light of the full moon, and smiled at her companions: the old shaman Tengis and her father, the Moscow University professor of linguistics, Maxim Elfimov. They were camping out near the lake’s shore, in their secret spot, just an eight-kilometer hike from Polyanka, Tengis’s native village.

It was getting chilly. This was Siberia; you could get a terrific summer tan in these parts during the day, but the chill of the night reminded you forcefully where you really were. Shivering, Sasha pulled a warm sweater out of her favorite backpack and put it on. The supple black leather backpack was a sixteenth birthday gift from her father, which he brought from his Italian trip, and the sweater was of her very own design and execution, artfully knitted with chunky yarns of the sunniest shades of sky blue—to match her eyes.

Finally, wrapped in cozy softness, she leaned her head on her father’s well-worn, Soviet-era rucksack, which still preserved the warmth of his body, and stretched her long, pleasantly tired legs. She squinted into the slithering flames of the campfire, her eyes following the escaping sparks straight into the sky, all the while inhaling deeply. The aroma was intoxicating—a mixture of pine, fresh water, and an elusive ingredient this place alone possessed in abundance, a scent the Mother Nature herself must have brewed in her secret labs for the few lucky souls to enjoy.

Sasha half-listened as her father and the old Shaman Tengis talked. Maxim wore his usual Soviet-made hiking gear and boots, insisting they didn’t make them like that anymore. He pensively stroked his short, dense beard (he always let it grow out in Siberia—warmer, and a break from shaving, according to him). Tengis, sitting in his usual lotus pose, gazed into the fire with those penetrating Asian eyes that seemed to be able to see into other dimensions. His beard was rare, as Asian beards tend to be, and all white. As Tengis talked, small clouds of puffy smoke issued from his mouth. It was one of his funny habits—he was a virtuoso when it came to talking without taking his pipe out of his mouth.

Sasha let the smell of taiga and the breeze from Baikal wash over her. The sacred lake of Siberia, Baikal, contained more than one fifth of the planet’s fresh water reserves. An average lake on Earth had rarely survived past the age of ten thousand years. There was nothing average about Baikal. Over a million years old, rather then contracting with age, it kept expanding. Scientists believed that Baikal was an ocean in the making, while the locals swore that its pristine blue depths possessed incredible healing and spiritual powers. At the moment, the sacred lake was a gleaming, rippled sheet of silver in the light of the full moon.

The dark taiga—Siberia’s giant untouched forest—loomed silent just behind them. The kettle bubbled merrily on top of the makeshift fire, as Tengis took out three travel mugs and got busy brewing his famous green tea.

“Sasha, tea?” He offered her a steamy cup, which she accepted gratefully. There was nothing better than Dedushka Tengis’s green tea after a day of hiking in taiga. She stretched her legs in front of the fire and savored it slowly.

She called him Dedushka, meaning “Grandpa,” ever since she could remember, because it seemed he was always there, and she had the feeling that he always silently and unobtrusively watched over her. Tengis wasn’t related to Sasha, of course not. He was a small, bowlegged Asian man with squinty dark eyes that pierced directly into your soul, as if it stood wide-open for everyone to see. And Sasha, who took after her father, was tall, with huge blue eyes and flowing hair that was the sunny color of ripe Russian wheat. The color of her hair she actually inherited from her mother, Olga.

Too bad Mama couldn’t make it, thought Sasha. Olga Elfimova had a very important job in Moscow and couldn’t join them for the summer vacation. She worked for Russia’s richest man, multibillionaire Boris Konukovsky, who was a CEO of NORUS, the country’s largest oil company. He was a very demanding man and Olga often kept long hours, because no one argued with Mr. Konukovsky if they wanted to keep their job and a head on their shoulders.

Maxim, being a professor, had summers off. School ended on June 22 and they just gave themselves enough time to pack.

“Peaceful.”

Just as she finished her sentence, she noticed two gleaming yellow eyes staring straight at her from the darkness of the trees.

“Dedushka Tengis,” she whispered. “Look!”

Tengis slowly turned his head in the direction of the gleaming eyes, as Sasha gave a slight gasp. More and more eyes were appearing in the surrounding darkness, and now at least ten pairs stared at them from various corners.

“Wolves,” mouthed Maxim. “Sasha, get behind me.” Maxim started getting slowly to his feet, while at the same time reaching for his hiking stick. “Sasha, behind me—now!”

“No, Papa!” Sasha shook her head. “You won’t achieve anything with your stick against ten wolves. Let me talk to them.” She started getting to her feet, too.

“No, Sasha, no! These are wolves, not seals!” Maxim made a quick move in her direction, as if trying to shield her, and that caused the wolves to growl.

“Papa, don’t,” Sasha whispered. “You are provoking them!”

“Oh, sit down and be quiet, you two!” said Tengis finally in an uncharacteristically sharp voice, carefully setting down his smoking pipe on the nearby rock. “I will handle this.”

Tengis rarely, if ever, got this way, which meant that he was serious. Sasha obediently sat back on the ground, and as she did, her nostrils were suddenly overpowered by the foul stench of a large, sweaty animal that appeared out of nowhere next to her. She turned her head to the right and saw a huge brown bear right where Tengis sat just a moment ago. The bear’s fur was shaggy, and as he got up to his hind feet, his towering form blocked the moon.

“Oh, my God!” yelled Maxim, jumping back to his feet. He threw himself on top of Sasha, attempting to protect her with his own body.

Sasha struggled to free herself. “Papa, it’s okay! It’s not what you think. Let me go, please!”

“Sasha, be quiet,” whispered Maxim frantically. “I will protect you!”

“You don’t need to, Papa. Just watch!”

Meanwhile, the bear didn’t even look at the two struggling humans next to him and made a deliberate beeline for the wolf pack. After taking several steps in the direction of the taiga, he again got up on his hind paws, his menacing claws shining in the light of the moon. Then, the bear opened his mouth, his growl rocking the forest. One of the wolves issued a squeal and started backing up. The others reluctantly followed.

The bear took a few more steps in the wolves’ direction and opened his mouth again. A growl, even louder than the first one, broke the stillness of the taiga. Two of the wolves deserted the field in a hurry; the rest backed up some more. Then, the bear stood all the way up on his hind paws, his giant front paws outstretched, and the third growl rocked the land. It sounded like the final warning. The wolves decided not to argue. The rest of the pack turned around and ran for their lives from this strange and dangerous beast that appeared out of nowhere and for some reason wanted to protect he humans.

The giant bear issued one more growl, evidently to reaffirm his victory. After that, he turned to face Sasha and Maxim…and smiled. His huge body started shrinking, until it was the same height as the tiny Tengis. A moment later, the bear was gone and the shaman was standing next to them, brushing the dust and animal hairs off his clothes.

“Still smell a little like the bear,” Tengis noted, chuckling. “Can’t be helped—residual effect. But no matter, it’ll air out by the time we reach the village.”

Beautiful Russia: The Golden Ring of Russia 2

Today, we are continuing a journey in time and space to the Golden Ring of Russia. As promised, I have expanded the initial post with additional pics, info and links to beautiful performances. Hop into my time machine, fasten your seat belt and… enjoy!

My previous post The Golden Ring of Russia 1 covered the most famous and the original Golden Ring towns. However as the time went, more towns, lesser known but not any less deserving, were added to the Golden Ring and it was expanded to the River Volga. Today I will cover the unique art, music, dance, history, and of course architecture, of some of the other towns along the Golden Ring. Perhaps somewhat less dramatic and less famous than their brethren covered in part 1, they are in some ways even more charming and unique.

GUS KHRUSTALNY

The name of this old town – Gus Khrustalny – located on River Gus means “A Crystal Goose”, which is the most descriptive town name I’ve ever seen, as its fame stems from these exact two things: the fine glass & crystal factory, as well as a very special type of goose grown in this region!

The local factory is world-renowned for its artistic designs of colored glass and crystal. Below are some of the fine original works of the local glass and crystal artisans, both modern and traditional:

A crystal church bell.

Above: Russian church made out of artistic glass.

The poster below reads: The Crystal Museum, Gus Chrustalny.

Glass-work at the local factory:

Famous local geese. They look pretty cool!

RYBINSK

Church of Ascention.

YURIEV-POLSKY

A lovely kremlin and quiet, pristine nature – very nice.

IVANOVO

This town is an anomaly of the Golden Ring. Its fate reminds me a bit of Detroit, a once famous capital of the US auto industry. A very dynamic textile capital of Russia in the past, Ivanovo is presently in decline after some of its famous cotton fabric factories closed down after the collapse of the USSR. Pity, I loved the quality of the Russian cotton!

As the industrial revolution swept across Russia, in the 19th century Ivanovo became one of the world’s major cotton fabric manufacturing regions. Before the 1917 Revolution, Russia was famous for its cottons. The tradition was carried on throughout the Soviet era. During the 1960s-1980s, Ivanovo was known as the “city of brides,” because the main workforce at the local factories were young women. The male/female ratio in Ivanovo was, shall we say, seriously lopsided. On the other hand, an enterprising young man looking for a bride, had a wealth of options, as all the girls here were young, pretty (they say) and hardworking. ;)

A view of Ivanovo, with its trams, Soviet era buildings and monuments (looking better than Detroit, I must say). ;)

Built up primarily in Soviet times, Ivanovo still possesses its share of beautiful architecture.

Convent of the Holy Virgin.

PLYOS

Plyos is a small, but very picturesque town on River Volga. Russians love their trees. As many Russian towns, it literally drowns in vegetation.

Local village homes:

Contemporary home:

Plyos, traditional Russian home with a spinning wheel:

KOSTROMA

Kostroma (empahsis on last ‘a’) is located on the river Volga and is a city with 277,000 inhabitants. Known for its cheese and milk products, Kostroma is also home to some of the most magnificent Russian medieval architecture.

The stunning Kostroma.

Midieval Kremlin, Kostroma.

Russia is world-famous for its dance and ballet. Performance by the national dance troupe Kostroma, showcasing whimsical silver tops made out of the amazing hand-made Russian lace, Vologodskie kruzheva.

MUROM

The ancient town of Murom is the birthplace of the legendary 12th century Russian knight and hero, “Bogatyr” Ilya Muromets (Ilya of Murom), who is one of the beloved characters of the Russian epic folklore and a real historic figure.

Bogatyrs (Worriors), a famous 1898 painting by Viktor Vasnetsov (Ilya Muromets is the center figure, with Dobrynya Nikitich to his left, and Alyosha Popovich to his right). In this painting, the Bogatyrs are depicted as protectors of the motherland, keeping watch against any possible attackers, which in those days were many.

Murom was first mentioned in Russian chronicles (bylini) in the year 862.

The old town of Murom is also home to the new and very lovely holiday celebrated in July: The Day of Love, Family and Fidelity, also called The Daisy Day, which is marked in the whole of Russia with musical concerts, celebrity appearances and various festivals. The holiday may be new, but it has its roots in the ancient tradition perpetuated by the two saints of the Russian Orthodox Church, Piotr and Fevronia of Murom, who were known for their otherworldly love and devotion to each other.

Monument to Prince (or Duke) Piotr and Fevronia of Murom.

A spectacular main festival and outdoor concert takes place in Murom, the birthplace of the holiday. It attracts major celebrities, musicians, singers, statesmen, as well as scores of visitors. The emblem of the festival is a daisy considered the national Russian flower.

Below are the Youtube links to a few of The Daisy Day performances, which are very much worth checking out (I personally love this holiday!)

Song Piotr and Fevronia performed by children’s group Neposedi. Live concert in Murom.

Anthem to Family performed by group Yin Yang. Live concert in Murom.

Anthem to Family (version 2) performed by Alsou, Alexei Vorobyov & Mark Tishman. Live concert in Murom, July 8, 2010.

Daisy Fields performed by group Quatro.

Day of Love performed by Diana Gurtskaya.

Welcome to my Award Party! Celebrating two new awards!

Wow! I am very honored and touched to receive Reader Appreciation Award from a fabulous guy and fellow author, Jim L. Wright. Thank you very much, Jim!

Here is the link to Jim’s post about the award. http://jimlwright.wordpress.com/2012/08/23/301/

Please check out Jim’s blog, The Left Wright Brain - it’s really great!

The rules for this award are:

  • Post seven interesting things about yourself,
  • Nominate 5 people who in turn will post on their page the award with the link to the giver,
  • Let them know about the nomination
  • Thank the blogger who nominated you and link back to their blog
  • Post the award logo

I already mentioned various interesting things about myself in my “acceptance speeches” for previous awards. ;)

You are invited to check them out here:

1. Sunshine Award

2. Versatile Blogger Award

3. One Lovely Blog Award

This time, I decided to do something a bit different, something I think my readers will enjoy. In keeping with the theme of this particular award, here are…

SEVEN THINGS I ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO WRITE ABOUT!

1. Awesome adventures, mysteries and thrillers. My adventure/thriller series with a touch of romance and paranormal, Accidental Spy Adventures, is well underway. So far, I’ve released Green Desert (Prequel, short novella), STEPFORD USA (US Adventure, full size novel) and GOLD TRAIN (Russia Adventure, full size novel). Coming next year: DRAGON GATE (Asia Adventure).

2. Fantasy and scifi. On September 13 I released my first fantasy/scifi short entitled CATHARSIS, Legend of the Lemurians (Earth Keepers Chronicles: Book 1). In December I’ll be releasing the highly anticipated THE EARTH SHIFTER, my new YA fantasy/thriller novel.

3. Wisdom and Spirituality

4. Futurism, or put another way, predictive analysis of future events

5. Nature and animals

6. Feng Shui, beauty, and Oriental art. (I regularly write about all of the above on my blog and I invite you to check out my posts!)

7. Last but not least! My travels and world cultures. In addition to writing about those, I love photography and try to post great pics of my favorite places to make it visual.

The new series of posts I am starting this fall is entitled “Beautiful Russia.” In this series I will be posting about various beautiful gems of Russian architecture, art, nature and culture. The first 2 posts will be about the Golden Ring of Russia, a ring of beautiful ancient towns north-east of Moscow. Most of these towns are at least 1000 years old and all of them are a feast for the senses, boasting beautiful art, architecture and nature. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites abound here. I will have tons of gorgeous pics soon, but for now, enjoy a sneak peek:

The ancient Kremlin, town of Suzdal, the Golden Ring of Russia

Suzdal monastery

The town of Sergiev Posad, the famous Sergiev Monastery, the Golden Ring of Russia

The town of Pereyaslavl-Zalessky, the Golden Ring of Russia

The artisans of the Golden Ring produce exquisite traditional Russian art. The town of Palekh is where the famous Palekh boxes come from. Each tiny box is hand-painted in the secret Palekh technique of feather-light stroke and goes for hundreds and thousands of dollars. And the town of Sergiev Posad is the birth place of the famous Russian Matryoshka (above).

I love this award! Once more, many thanks to Jim L. Wright for nominating me for the Reader Appreciation Award!

In turn, here are five (+ one) of my favorite bloggers whom I want to nominate for this great award. I love reading their blogs and highly recommend them to my readers!

Love, Compassion, and Ugly 2: The Pigeon

26 Sunday Aug 2012

Bird, dove, Feral Pigeon, Love, Moscow, Odessa, Paris, peace, pets, Pigeons on European squares, Postal pigeons, Red Square, Venice, wisdom

The heartbreaking story of the loving and forgiving stray cat, named Ugly, is something that resonates deeply with me. Read the original story here:

http://ladaray.wordpress.com/2012/08/22/love-compassion-and-ugly/

What is it that makes people act indifferently or cruelly towards others, be it an innocent animal, Earth’s nature or another human being. Ignorance? Closed-mindedness? Fear? All of the above? Parents who live in fear and with their minds closed then instruct their children, and perhaps even pets, like the dogs in Ugly’s sad story, to live and act in the same way.

Who hasn’t had experiences with bullies in their childhood? But what if a bully grows up and becomes this? Remember the terrible story that happened in New Jersey a few years ago, that of a young gay man, whose roommate at Rutgers University posted videos of him having sexual acts on the internet? This deliberately cruel act led to the young man’s suicide. The story received a lot of publicity and the guilty person received punishment. But what about so many other despicable acts and attitudes that get swept under the carpet? Do they just disappear? Do they teach a lesson? Do they leave a mark? Or do they escalate into something monstrous?

Where there is ignorance and closed-mindedness, there is prejudice followed by irrational fear, and even violence to “protect” the “threatened way of life.” In Ugly’s story, humans hosed down the poor stray and shut his paws in their doors. But on a global scale, these attitudes lead to wars, or attempts to start wars, as we are presently observing in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, and Iran. What always struck me is that people who have started the war in Iraq haven’t the faintest idea on how to correctly pronounce the name of the country, nor do they care to know how people in that country live and what’s important to them.

But it always starts small; it always starts close to home.

THE PIGEON

In the old days, pigeons delivered urgent and important messages. Postal pigeons brought hope and saved lives. They carried correspondence from war zones and hard to reach places; they delivered messages from stranded or imprisoned people, leading to their rescue. Intelligent and gentle birds, they have been considered messengers of the gods. And along with the dove, their close relative, in Europe they are a symbol of peace and love.

Pigeons are a fixture on European squares, with people feeding them and kids chasing them, which pigeons don’t seem to mind. Humans and pigeons have always peacefully coexisted in the most beautiful cities of Europe, and some consider them an enhancement to the scenery. In Italy and some other countries it is actually considered great luck and a sign from God when a pigeon poops on you. In Odessa, where I grew up, children built pigeon lofts on roofs of apartment buildings, where they fed and played with pigeons. Although people in Europe LOVE feeding pigeons, authorities are not amused, aiming to limit the pigeon population.

Paris pigeons.

Pigeons in Red Square, Moscow.

Pigeons in St. Mark’s Square, Venice. Authorities don’t like it when people feed the pigeons. Some cities even impose a hefty fine if you do. This photo’s inscription reads: “They sure missed the sign that says, don’t feed the pigeons.”

One of the many beautiful fountains of Odessa, this one with city pigeon sculptures.

A few days ago my husband and I have rescued a young pigeon, who appeared to have fallen out of the third story attic where lots of local pigeons resided. The building in question is located on Main Street, a short walk from our house in the Catskills. My husband noticed the poor bird sitting motionlessly on the sidewalk, as cars and huge rumbling trucks passed by. He was not fully grown, but not a baby any more either. He might have flown out of his flock’s nest on top of the building for the first time, but grew tired and was unable to fly back up.

The little thing puffed up his little body in fear and had a very dejected and ugly look. We were afraid something might happen to him so close to the traffic and started slowly directing him along the nearby driveway into the inner courtyard. The pigeon stood up and reluctantly walked into the courtyard on his unsteady little feet. We followed to see where he would go. At first, the pigeon went all the way to the back as if trying to blend with the wall, and stood like that, his back to the door of one of the courtyard’s small stores, which was closed for the moment.

My concern was that someone might open the door and squash him. As if hearing my thoughts, the pigeon slowly emerged from his “hiding spot” and settled himself in the middle of the parking lot with the same dejected look, with cars around him coming and going. People would walk to their cars right past the pigeon, and drive out without giving him a second look. At times he tried to fly, but couldn’t.

We knew if we didn’t do something fast, our little pigeon would be squashed by one of these cars in no time. I went inside of one of the stores located in the courtyard and asked the owner whether they had the key to the attic so I could put the pigeon back where he would be safe.

The woman said that only the landlord had access to the attic. I asked if she had the landlord’s telephone number. Here is what the store owner responded: “I don’t want to bother the landlord for something as insignificant as a pigeon.” I replied that it was a living thing, just like her or me, but she firmly reiterated: “I won’t bother him for a pigeon.”

Meanwhile, my husband ran back to our house to look up the instructions for pigeon rescue.

Turns out that if a pigeon sits without moving, if he can’t fly and allows you to handle him, it means he is tired and in need of a few hours of rest. We made a few holes in a cardboard box, I put on leather gloves, just in case, and placed the little pigeon safely in the box. He allowed me to handle him and my husband carried him home.

On the way to our house, we met a woman walking two adorable dogs. My husband proceeded home, while I stopped to pet them, as the woman started telling all about her beloved pets. I listened to her, thinking that it was great to meet another animal lover.

“We just rescued a little pigeon,” I shared with her.

The woman’s attitude changed immediately. “Did you know that pigeons carry lice?” she said.

“Oh,” I responded, “I wore gloves, see?” And I showed her my gloves, which I took off to pet her dogs.

“And lice can get in your hair,” she went on. “Just letting you know.” She jerked on her dogs’ leashes and quickly left.

My husband laughed when I told him the story. “I have news for her,” he said. “Dogs carry lice just as much, if not more. And according to my research, there is no substantial evidence that pigeons carry lice. It’s more of a tale than reality.”

I believe my husband. He is good at research.

We placed the box with our little pigeon in our shady back yard to allow him to rest and calm down. A couple of hours later, I took him out of the box and let him wander around the yard. We also gave him some bird feed and water. He ate and drank and again sat in the sun, resting. We were a little concerned about our cat Lily’s reaction to the pigeon. Lily loves basking in the sun in our back yard, which our little princess considers her domain. But, as if knowing that it would not be a good idea on that specific day, Lily (this famous mind reader) slept in the TV room all day, which was highly unusual for her on such nice, sunny day.

Meanwhile, the little pigeon started recovering. When we first saw him, he was all dull and puffed up from fatigue and fear. Now his black body started acquiring an irridescent glow. His little feet, which seemed pale pink when we found him, now acquired a distinctive red coloring. His neck, which was initially puffed up to a degree that I thought that perhaps something was wrong with him, now stretched and became slim and graceful, as he calmed down, ate and rested. His body was very pleasantly warm to the touch and he turned out to be a very beautiful little pigeon.

The pigeon wandered back and forth around the back yard and the driveway, and eventually headed to the front. I caught him again almost on the sidewalk and put him back deeply into the back yard, where he continued his exploration. Although his wings seemed fine and he was now well rested, his attempts to fly were still unsuccessful. I left him alone, deciding that he would be okay in the back and because I had lots to do. I retreated to my study, asking my husband to watch him from the window of his study.

When I came out several hours later, my little pigeon was gone. Turns out, while I was at work, he got his wings back and flew off, no doubt to new adventures.

I’ll miss him. But wherever he is today, I wish him a safe and happy journey!

I received a Sunshine Blogger Award from author and inspiring blogger, Holly Michael. Thank you, thank you, Holly! It is a great honor and privilege!

Here is the link to Holly’s blog, Writing Straight: http://writingstraight.com/2012/08/13/award-time-yay/ Check it out, it’s awesome!

To accept this award, I am required to answer a series of questions and then pass the Sunshine Blogger Award to other deserving bloggers, link my nominees to this post and comment on their blog letting them know of their nomination. Below are my answers and the blogs I have nominated.

1. What is your favorite Christmas movie?

Christmas in Connecticut. It’s fun and funny, has enough intrigue and romance, plus a rare innocence impossible to duplicate today.

2. What is your favorite flower?

Lotus. Check out my recent post: The Divine Lotus

3. What is your favorite non-alcoholic beverage? Green Tea: Jasmine Pearl or Dragon Pearl (Chinese), as well as Sencha (Japanese). I like making tea in one of my traditional yixing teapots, which I collect, and drink it out of a delicate china cup, enjoying the aroma and taste. It’s a very meditative experience. Yum!

4. What is your passion? Imagining cool stories and making them come alive on paper or screen. I like to teach, inspire and open people’s eyes to the obvious and not so obvious through my writing.

5. What is your favorite time of year? Spring, because that’s when nature awakens to new life and because it’s my birthday time. And Fall, because of the beautiful colors and festive harvest.

6. What is your favorite time of day? Night time, when everything out there, in the big world, quiets down and I can sit down at my computer to think and write.

7. What is your favorite physical activity? Walking and hiking. They say, it’s a quintessential writer’s activity as creative juices flow best while walking. ;)

8. What is your favorite vacation? I’ve been to many countries and loved them all. I really miss Russia. I went back to Russia last year to reconnect and do research for my book, Gold Train, Accidental Spy Russia Adventure set in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

One of the golden-domed Kremlin cathedrals, Moscow, Russia (this is real gold, by the way).

I am planning trips to Odessa, on the Black Sea, and to Lake Baikal, Siberia, both to re-visit and do research for my upcoming books.

A beach in Odessa where I grew up. Odessa is a beautiful resort on the Black Sea. Along with several other exotic Black Sea locales, it will be the backdrop of one of the future Accidental Spy Adventures.

The famous Potemkin Steps in Odessa, connecting the historic center above with the seaport. The Potemkin Steps ensemble considered one-of-a-kind architectural phenomenon, was the site of the 1925 silent film, Battleship Potemkin (Russian: Броненосец «Потёмкин», Bronenosets Potyomkin), which has been called one of the most influential movies of all time, and was named “the greatest film of all time” in 1958.

Odessa’s spectacular Opera & Ballet House, located at – where else – 1 Chaikovsky Drive.

The famous grand stares inside Odessa Opera, considered by some architecturally the best Opera House in the world, along with Milan’s La Scala. And in case you were wondering, yes, it is real gold! The Odessa Opera, Potemkin Steps, the unique seaport, along with the entire stately center of Odessa together are a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Sacred Lake Baikal, Siberia, Russia, also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The oldest (25 mln years old), largest and deepest lake in the world, Baikal contains over 20% of the planet’s fresh water reserves, and according to locals, possesses mysterious healing powers. It will be featured in my upcoming YA fantasy/thriller, The Earth Shifter.

These are the bloggers I feel deserve the Sunshine Award because of their positive, inspiring and/or creative blogs.

1. Lori Lipsky http://poetrypatio.wordpress.com/. I love Lori’s poetry and her sunshine attitude!

2. Russel Ray http://russelrayphotos2.com/ Russel is a San Diego photographer with sharp wit and very cool cat, named Zoey. His posts are super-creative and very funny!

3. Francis http://niltsi.com/ Francis writes beautiful poetry and does wonderful photography. His dog, Pumpkin, is a cutie!

4. Maddy Walsh at 1 Earth Now Blog http://1earthnow.wordpress.com/ For selflessly and generously seeking out & reblogging today’s best and most inspired bloggers!

5. Maxima http://hillsofherchastity.wordpress.com/ For beautiful flowers and lovely sentiment!

6. The Blazing Trail http://theblazingtrail.wordpress.com/ For courageous and inspiring posts!

7. Ayanna Nahmias http://ayannanahmias.com/ For caring what happens in our world and speaking out for justice (even if I disagree with some of Ayanna’s views). I especially want to honor Ayanna for the heartbreaking post: Love, Compassion and Ugly http://ayannanahmias.com/2012/08/12/animal-rights-story/

Update: I have just added 3 more well-deserving blogs to my list of award recipients.

8. Benjamin http://prewitt1970.wordpress.com/,  who is fighting Parkinson’s desease, while producing some absolutely stunning art! I especially want to honor Benjamin for his amazing painting and post entitled Angels and Demons http://prewitt1970.wordpress.com/2012/08/18/angels-and-demons-2/

9. Sumithra Sriram http://hearingwiththeeye.wordpress.com/ for beautiful and wise nature photography!

10. Gertie http://fabricatedfables.wordpress.com/ Gertie is only 12, but she writes with maturity some adults could envy. Her stories are imaginative and evolved and I think she has great future as a writer! I especially liked her fantasy short story, Why Should I Save the Universe? http://fabricatedfables.wordpress.com/2012/07/22/stuff/ Keep writing, Gertie!

Congratulations to all winners!

Update: THE EARTH SHIFTER, New YA Fantasy/Thriller

The GOLD TRAIN blog tour, Stepford USA and Green Desert free promos, and life in general, have somewhat delayed the completion of THE EARTH SHIFTER, my new YA fantasy thriller. But I am getting back on track and have every intention of writing through the summer. THE EARTH SHIFTER release is scheduled for mid-September. So if I am MIA, you’ll know where to find me, namely, at my desk, typing away.

Picture

Note: This is only the preliminary cover

THE EARTH SHIFTER is set in Moscow, sacred Lake Baikal in Siberia, New York, China, as well as other mystical realms of this surreal Blue Planet. I will be posting updates of my progress, as well as the book’s synopsis and excerpts throughout the summer. To find out more about THE EARTH SHIFTER, please visit my author website http://www.LadaRay.com/the-earth-shifter.

I am also working on DRAGON GATE, the new Jade Snow Adventure set in Asia. It is currently set for release during the Holiday Season 2012.

The weather has been very nice, and I hope to also find the time to enjoy the great outdoors. We have pretty fabulous nature here, in the Catskill Mountains. I enjoy hiking on the local Rail Trail, a defunct rail road turned nature trail, looking for inspiration.

I’ve taken some fabulous photos, but since WordPress has been pretty uncooperative lately, it’s been difficult to post a lot of pics in one post, evidently, due to WordPress’ servers being overwhelmed. My husband’s verdict: they need more bandwidth. He should know, this is right up his alley. Perhaps, one day I’ll share as many great pics as possible. But today, here are just a few as a sampler. I think you are gonna love them!

Blog, Blogger, Catskill Mountains, China, Moscow, Russia, USA, VBA, Versatile Blogger Award

I received the Versatile Blogger Award (VBA) from author and blogger, Mike Edwards!

versatileblogger11

Here is the link to Mike’s post: http://worldadventurers.wordpress.com/2012/05/19/i-received-the-versatile-blogger-award/

According to my esteemed sponsor, Mike Edwards, here is what VBA is all about:

Versatile Blogger Award (VBA)

What is it?

As far as I can tell — details are rather sketchy and only the creator knows for sure — this lofty-sounding award is basically a mutual admiration society where bloggers recognize their peers for writing quality blogs that touched them in some way. The VBAs honor the blogger rather than specific posts. It’s a chance for bloggers to pat themselves on the back like the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences does with the Oscars. Until someone starts giving out Blogscars, the VBAs will have to suffice.

What are the criteria?

If you are nominated, you’ve been awarded the Versatile Blogger Award. I nominated 15 outstanding bloggers below. Congratulations!

Thank the person who gave you this award. That’s common courtesy.

Thank you, Mike! I am truly honored and touched!

Include a link to their blog. That’s also common courtesy — if you can figure out how to do it.

Link to Mike’s blog, World Adventurers: http://worldadventurers.wordpress.com/

Next, select 15 blogs/bloggers that you’ve recently discovered or follow regularly. (I would add, pick blogs or bloggers that are excellent!)

The envelope, please…

Nominate those 15 bloggers for the Versatile Blogger Award — you might include a link to this site.

And the nominees/winners are (in no particular order):

1. Different Outcomes Blog by Jason Sullivan http://differentoutcomes.wordpress.com/

2. BooksReview4U by J.J. Collins http://booksreview4u.wordpress.com/

3. Jambalian by Alan McDermott http://jambalian.blogspot.com/

4. Writing Straight by Holy Michael http://writingstraight.com/

5. Kate’s Reads http://kates-reads.blogspot.com/

7. Jack Whitsel http://jwhitsel.wordpress.com/

8. The Bad Luck Detective by Suzie Ivy http://badluckdetective.wordpress.com/

9. Wordsfromanelli by Anelli Purchase http://wordsfromanneli.wordpress.com/2012/05/08/all-up-in-the-hills/#comment-832

13. A Library of Our Own by Debbie http://alibraryofourown.blogspot.com/

14. The Manicheans by Johanna Pitcairn http://themanicheans.wordpress.com/

15. Flash Bites by Krista Bunskoek http://flashbites.wordpress.com/

Congratulations, winners!

Finally, tell the person who nominated you 7 things about yourself.

My “ACCEPTANCE SPEECH”

I want to thank the Academy and my distinguished colleagues for nominating me… ahem… ahem… Here, I am supposed to tell you seven things about myself that prove how versatile I am ;)

That’s a tough one… Okay, let’s try:

1. I was born in Moscow, Russia, but since the ripe age of 2 lived and traveled all over the world.

2. My entire family was connected to travel and various modes of transportation, including trains, ships and space ships. Despite that, my preferred way of getting around is plain old walking.

3. The only mode of transportation I never managed to become personal friends with is… the bicycle, despite the fact that my husband is an accomplished cyclist and I love watching Le Tour de France (primarily because of awesome castles).

4. By the age of 38 I managed to have 3 different successful careers on 3 different continents… And then I decided to follow my dreams and started writing. Little did I know what I was getting myself into ;)

5. My life – and writing – is intrinsically connected to 3 largest and most powerful countries on the planet: USA, Russia and China. But I would much prefer to live in the world without power struggles and borders :)

6. Despite having had a high powered career and having traveled extensively, or perhaps because of that, my preferred residence is my writing retreat in the quiet Catskill Mountains, NY.

7. After I started writing, I found myself busier than I’ve ever been. And that’s saying a lot coming from a former stock broker. I have big plans for my future books, and writing is always the biggest fun, but I am equally determined to find more time to meditate and be with nature.

Congrats to the new VBA winners, and thanks again to my friend, Mike Edwards!

GOLD TRAIN Blog Tour Centerpiece: May Day Interview

Accidental Spy Series, action adventure, author interview, Dr. Zhivago, Gold Train, Jade Snow, May Day, Mikhail Bulgakov, Moscow, mystery thriller, Russia, Russian literature, Russian Revolution, Saint Petersburg, Soviet Union

GOLD TRAIN Blog Tour continues! Today please enjoy a very special interview, which I call The Centerpiece of the Gold Train Blog Tour.

Don’t forget to check out other awesome blog stops, Gold Train reviews and giveaways here!

Reblogged from Different Outcomes blog by author Jason Sullivan:

May Day Interview with Lada Ray, author of Gold Train

Today I would like to welcome linguist and writer Lada Ray to the Different Outcomes blog. She is here to discuss her new exciting thriller Gold Train. Perhaps she might also share with us a little about her fascinating life growing up in Russia.

Jason: I would prefer to ask a few somewhat atypical questions, which might give you the possibility of going deeper into them. The areas that fascinate me, although the whole book is so wonderfully exciting, are the following:

The White Army connection with modern Russia, its historical background and current association with other countries, is very interesting. I fear most Americans have a very superficial understanding of the Russian Revolution, and especially the White Army. I always remember the scene from Dr Zhivago when they are crossing a field and are ambushed! In your book you obviously have a more complex and, I think I may say, holistic approach to this conflict. Perhaps not dissimilar to how some Americans have come to view their own Civil War as an opportunity to move beyond differences, although some are still fighting it! But you put forth this sense of pride in Russia, in wanting a healthy Russia which has healed from past conflicts and which is not manipulated by foreign interests. So, I don’t know if that is all one question, or maybe more, but generally, maybe you could share some more with us this unique sense we get in the book, perhaps possible only from an author born in Russia!

Lada: These are some wonderful questions, Jason, and I’ll try answering them, remaining as entertaining and educational as possible.

I love your definition of my approach to the conflict as “holistic.” I think, most Russians have come to view it as such, having made peace with it and having been able to understand both sides’ point of view. A huge credit for this goes to the educational value of the Soviet and Russian literature and film. These topics, especially the Civil War, are perennial favorites in Russia.

During the Soviet era, more emphasis was put on the role of the Red Army, but starting with the mid 1980’s, when Gorbachev came to power, more attention was given to the White movement. That said, the books written/movies made during the Soviet era did a great job portraying the conflict thoughtfully and evenhandedly.

I grew up with many amazing movies and books, and Dr. Zhivago was only one of them. An excellent book, to be sure, and the one that had a profound effect on the Western society, but hardly the only, and some even think, not even the best in the long line of books/movies about the Russian Civil War. The books/movies I am talking about all portrayed the conflict in a rather balanced way, even if they sided with the Red Army and Bolsheviks ideologically. The human element, motivations, depth of drama – all that was amazingly done.

I think, due to the politics and the wall that existed, and to the extent still does exist between the American and Russian cultures, Americans have a very distorted understanding of the history and implications of the 1917 Revolution and Civil War. I have to say that on average the Europeans and the rest of the world have a much better comprehension of the Russian history.

I want to mention a few movies and books, which come to mind immediately when we talk about the subject – all great in their own right. These are the classics, and those who have an interest in Russian history will find them not only enlightening, but also immensely entertaining. If you can find any of these with English subs or translation, they are well worth watching or reading. I suggest checking out YouTube, you never know what treasures you may uncover there. As to the books, the English translations  of these classics should be readily available.

Soviet Books/Movies:

Movie Beg – The Flight, 1970. Based on the play by Mikhail Bulgakov, Flight. A dramatic and memorable epic about destinies and emigration to Istanbul and Paris of several senior officers and other White Russians during the Civil War. The characters are painted with profound humanity. Great cast, too!

Movie Dni Turbinykh – Days of The Turbins, 1976. Based on the highly acclaimed novel by Mikhail Bulgakov, The White Guard. One of my favorites growing up, boasting tremendous cast of actors. Also about the destinies of several White Russians with different personalities and views. Resolves the conflict in favor of staying in Russia, rather than emigrating. The movie is worth watching not only for the drama and character development, but also for humor and great songs.

As an aside, Mikhail Bulgakov is widely recognized as one of the great authors and visionaries of the 20th century. I also highly recommend his mega-popular, cult book: Master and Margarita. Set in the 1930’s Moscow, it is a dark fantasy about a writer and his trials and tribulations against the backdrop of the Stalinist Russia, his forbidden romance with Margarita, complicated by the appearance of the Devil himself. But that’s not all; inserted within the novel is the story of life and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Part of the book takes place in mystical realms of Heaven and Earth. The imagery and philosophy of the book is incredibly striking. It is available in English, moreover, the recently made wonderful mini-series based on Master and Margarita can be purchased on Amazon with English subs. You can probably also sample it on YouTube.

But back to the Russian Civil War: TV Series Adyutant Evo Prevoskhoditelstva – Adjutant of His Excellency, 1969. An excellent mini series about a Red/Soviet spy, who infiltrated the headquarters of the White Army and became personal adjutant to the commander in chief. Needless to say, he was able to thwart some major operations by the Whites, until he was discovered. To add to the drama, the spy, beautifully portrayed by the famous Russian actor, Yury Solomin, falls in love with the daughter of the chief security officer of the White Army, the man who is constantly on his trail. Plus, the series includes some great train action, where a very valuable train, containing advanced tanks and machinery, sent by the West for the Whites, gets blown up! Couldn’t have written it better myself!

Tikhiy Don – And Quiet Flows The Don. Both a book and epic movie about the role of Cossacks in the 1918 Civil War, some of whom sided with the Whites and others with the Reds. An absolute classic of the Soviet literature by Mikhail Sholokhov. For years, Soviet literature had been shunned by the Nobel Prize Committee for political and ideological reasons. Pity, there were many works that deserved to be considered and awarded. Mikhail Sholokhov was one of the few Russian authors who, along with Boris Pasternak, author of Dr. Zhivago, received the Nobel Prize for literature.

Recent Russian Movie:

Moi Admiral – My Admiral, 2008. Starring Konstantin Habensky, known in the West for his acclaimed role in Night Watch and Day Watch, dark fantasies, set in today’s Moscow. Moi Admiral is about the famous leader of the White Movement, Admiral Kolchak, his life, romance and drama. Kolchak was eventually betrayed by the Tsar’s Army Czech Corps who initially sided with the Whites, but eventually handed Kolchak over to the Reds who ended up executing him. I haven’t seen the movie yet, but it received some tremendous press.

I want to let you in on my secret. I wasn’t planning on announcing it just yet, but since we are on this topic, I thought I’d give my readers a sneak peek of what’s to come in the Jade Snow Series. As you may know, this year I will be releasing the next Jade Snow adventure – DRAGON GATE, set in Asia. But after that, in Jade’s third adventure, she will head back to Russia, specifically, to the legendary Lake Baikal in Siberia, for the continuation of the Tsar’s Gold saga. Incidentally, the story of Admiral Kolchak and his betrayal by the Czech Corps is intrinsically connected to the treasure. I’ll say no more so not to spoil the surprise… and I am planning lots of those in the following books!

Jason: Another aspect of the book, which fascinates me is your opening, it is so wonderfully written, where the train is pirated. You also feature beautiful modern trains and stations in Russia. And then we hear you have personal experience because your father worked for the train system in Russia. I love trains! I think everyone does. They are so romantic! So anything you might think of with regard to your inside perspective or childhood memories of trains. Is the great gold robbery the most infamous of Russian train stories? Are there other famous train stories in Russia that you might relate? What sort of role did trains play in the history of Russia? And, also, and this might be the most interesting to readers, what specific memories might you share about riding through the Russian countryside and into the cities by train? What was it like, what were the passengers like, any exciting moments?

Lada: The trains had always played a huge role in the Russian history. Unlike in the USA, historically, the Russian roads had been in pretty bad condition and the auto industry hadn’t developed to the extent it has in the USA. Although Russia is a major power in aeronautics, civil aviation had lagged and is only now starting to mature. Moreover, due to the vastness of the country’s landmass with seas surrounding it, the ships had been important, but not universally usable.

That left trains and related vehicles as the primary source of transportation. Russia inherited the Soviet public transportation system, which was very well developed and maintained. Within smaller cities, you had a comprehensive network of trams and trolleys (trolleybus), aided by some bus traffic (usually for longer express journeys). In larger cities, primarily Moscow and St. Petersburg, the most popular mode of transportation was, still is (and probably will always be) the truly one-of-a-kind Russian Metro. Moscow Metro, in addition to being a beautiful underground architectural miracle, is also the second busiest metro in the world, after Tokyo’s Twin Cities metro, carrying 8 million passengers a day. St. Petersburg Metro, considered by some to be even more beautiful, and the world’s deepest, is also the 5th busiest on the planet. The Russian Metro is featured in Gold Train, including one of the most dramatic episodes of the book.

For connections between cities and suburbs, people normally use local diesel and electric trains, called “Electrichka.” And for long-distance travel, regular trains, expresses, and lately, high-speed trains. Sapsan, the high-speed train, connecting Moscow and St. Petersburg, is featured in Gold Train as well.

Three generations of the Russian Trains:

 Old Soviet Locomotive

Traditional Nokolayevsky Express, Moscow – Saint Petersburg, the one Jade rode in Gold Train (named after the last Russian Tsar Nicolas)

High-speed train Sapsan featured in Gold Train

Of course, the challenge now is to transition this very comprehensive, well-oiled, but aging system into the 21st century, preserving its heritage, yet innovating it to suit tomorrow’s needs.

Just like you, Jason, I love trains and could talk about them for ages. For now I’ll be getting off my soapbox.

To answer your question about the robbery of the Gold Reserve of the Russian Empire in 1918. Let’s remember that GOLD TRAIN, although based on real historic events, is a book of fiction and the events as described in the prologue are a product of my imagination or are used fictitiously, according to the disclaimer on the book’s copyright page. There are many theories as to how the Gold Reserve really disappeared and there is no consensus to this day as to what happened to the treasure. We can definitely say that more than one train was involved.

I hinted in GOLD TRAIN that there is more treasure to be found. This hint was made for a reason. As mentioned earlier, I intend to explore this story further, when Jade together with Alexei, travels to Lake Baikal in Siberia during her third adventure.

Were there any other famous events related to trains in the Russian history? During the Civil War, trains were attacked and robbed regularly. Let’s remember that in addition to the main opposing forces in that conflict, the Whites and the Reds, there was a rainbow of different factions – the Greens (this was the color used by the bandits and robbers, not the Green Party), The Blacks (anarchists), and even The Yellow-Blues (I’m not kidding – these were the Ukrainian nationalists).

The bandits and so many others just wanted to capitalize on the general disorder, confusion and misfortune, and robberies of peaceful passenger trains were frequent, reminiscent of the Wild West page in the US history.

After the war ended and order in the county was restored, very few robberies took place due to tough law enforcement. Of course during World War II, lots of Russian treasures were looted by the Nazis from the museums and taken to Germany and some other countries. The most famous of them is the looting of the legendary Amber Room, considered by some to be the Eight’s Wonder of the World. It was stolen from Catherine Palace near St. Petersburg and its whereabouts are unknown to this day.

For more about this, read my post on Lada Ray Blog: Tsars, Oligarchs and Treasure: St. Petersburg, Russia.

When I grew up in Russia, the travel on trains, or any other mode of transportation was 100% safe. Robberies were unheard of. Even petty crime was rare. I remember once, the crime of the year was that someone was snatching fur hats from people’s heads. The culprits were eventually apprehended and the “wave of hat snatching” had stopped.

I was born in Moscow, but grew up in Odessa, on the Black Sea, where both of my parents worked for the Southern Railways. My father did financial/legal audits and traveled a lot; my mother’s job description was to sit at the headquarters and regulate railroad’s traffic for any given sector. I remember as a child visiting her huge office with tall ceilings and soundproof walls (so that she wouldn’t get distracted when she was on duty, as a single mistake on her part could cause a collision). The office was large enough to do cartwheels in. On the wall she had an enormous map of the entire Southern Railroad, dotted with glittering lights, signifying passing trains, signals and intersecting tracks. All this looked awfully important. ;)

On long-distance trains, there are 3 main classes: 1st, 2nd and 3rd. I normally rode 2nd class, as it was free for me. I took 1st class only when I was with my father, who due to his job had free 1st class tickets.

Second class sleeper coupe, or compartment, has 4 bunk beds on two levels, with upper bunks pulled up during the day, luggage compartments and a foldable table in the center. The trains usually have nice rugs in corridors and compartments and are very clean and cozy.

The beds have mattresses, pillows and fresh linens and are quite comfortable to sleep in. First class has 2 bunk beds, which turn into plush sofas during the day. Each 1st and 2nd class compartment has a door, which can be locked for privacy. 3rd class has no doors and there are 6 bunks per unit – two of them next to the corridor. 3rd class doesn’t have any rugs, plus there is no privacy at all. The whole carriage would usually buzz all day long as people chat, sing songs and play guitar. It’s certainly much more sociable – and much cheaper. Many younger people would travel 3rd class to save money.

Russians love feeling cozy and comfortable on long-distance trains. They usually bring a pair of slippers and even robes and pajamas to change into. Russian trains provide tea in traditional thin glasses in silver holders or in porcelain cups as part of their service. I have the fondest memories of these tea glasses in silver holders. The scene in Gold Train, when Jade rides the overnight express from Moscow to St. Petersburg echoes my childhood memories.

As part of my parents’ job perks, they always had free train tickets, which I’ve always put to good use. I traveled ever since I can remember, often alone. I was always an adventurer at heart and staying put in one place wasn’t for me. It was so safe to ride a train to another city even as a ten or twelve year old, that I often did just that.

My uncle and aunt lived in Bendery and my much older cousin Sasha (Alexander) in Kishinev (Chisinau), Moldova. Currently, these two cities are located in different countries, as Moldova split in two parts after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. I loved visiting my relatives and did that ever since I was eleven. My mother would usually take me to the station and put me on the train. Two hours later in Bendery, I would jump off the train, walk two blocks to my uncle and aunt’s house and surprise them. Then, my aunt Zeena would usually dial my mother and admonish her for letting me travel without any supervision. My kindly Uncle Vasya and Aunt Zeena never managed to get used to the level of my independence.

Once, my mother put me on the train to visit my older cousin Vera, who lived in Nikolayev, a city about four hours east of Odessa. Nikolayev was one of the Black Sea’s Soviet fleet bases, where Vera’s husband was a naval officer. It was the first time I was traveling to that particular city, as my relatives had only recently moved there. I was about twelve at the time. Vera and her husband were supposed to meet me at the train station.

It was late afternoon and my mother was late for work. Feeling distracted, she put me on the wrong train. I knew that I would be in Nikolayev by eight thirty p.m. and Vera’s husband would be waiting for me on the platform. I realized that something was wrong when the train made its final stop at some tiny, godforsaken station in the middle of nowhere and the last two passengers quickly dismounted and disappeared into the darkness stretching beyond the single light illuminating the tiny platform. It was past nine p.m.

The small station building was dark. Obviously, the staff left for the day. I realized immediately that I was, for lack of a better word, screwed. Now, let’s remember, it was well before cell phones.

Thank goodness for my sharp reflexes. As the train was preparing to leave and the conductor, an indifferent-looking woman, was about to snap the train door shut, I dashed to her and explained the situation. She said that the train was going to the depot, some ten kilometers away, and there was nothing she could do. Turned out, my mother (the big train specialist that she was) had not only put me on the wrong train, but also on the train going in the wrong direction. As a result, I was nowhere near Nikolayev. Before long, the whole crew was gathered around, trying to figure out what to do with me. I decided not to tell them who I really was so they wouldn’t start fussing, or god forbid, put me on the train back home. I wanted to continue with my adventure.

Someone remembered that another train would pass this station shortly. It wasn’t an express and it would make all local stops, but it would get me to Nikolayev. I waited on the dark, deserted platform, and lo and behold, thirty minutes later a train did stop. It was indeed headed towards Nikolayev, but there was a problem. I didn’t have enough for the ticket. My mother gave me a few rubles for the road, but since I was to be met by my loving cousin’s family, who was supposed to take care of all my expenses, she didn’t bother giving me any more.

The conductor looked at me and said that I should put my money away. She gave me a seat in the third class compartment and brought some tea (again for free) in that same thin, gold-rimmed glass set in the traditional Russian silver holder, which I always remember with warmth. The scene that I experienced many times in my life – the conductor (stewardess) bringing tea in a glass with silver holder – is described in Gold Train.

I drank tea and munched on cookies the other passengers in the sociable 3rd class shared with me. The train arrived to Nikolayev at dawn. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the main train station, but the auxiliary one, located very far from the city itself. I went around, asking people how to get to the center of the city. They said that trolley traffic started at six. I waited till six and boarded the first trolley. It took me almost an hour to get to the city center.

There was another problem, which would have stumped anyone – but not me. When my mother so infamously put me on the wrong train, no one bothered to provide me with my cousin’s address. Because, well, because it was assumed I didn’t need one, since my relatives would be meeting me at the station. Thank goodness for my memory. I happened to catch a quick glimpse of that address when my mother was handling it earlier and I miraculously managed to remember it.

While on the trolley, I started asking other passengers where the 5th Greenhouse Drive might be. I am not kidding, this was the name of the street! Of course, as you can imagine, no one had the faintest idea where such street was to be found. But I persevered. Finally, one man said that he thought that I should get off on the next stop and walk a few blocks. I took a chance and got off. As I walked, I kept asking passersby and little by little I was directed to the right street. I walked along the narrow, hidden alley and located my cousin’s house. I knocked on the door, which was opened by Igor, my disheveled looking cousin in law, followed by similarly disheveled Vera. Both didn’t sleep all night. It turned out, the entire railroad, as well as local police, were searching for me, task made ever more difficult by the fact that my mother forgot which train she put me on. When I knocked, my cousin thought it was the police with news. The room was full of smoke, as Igor, who had recently quit, started smoking again to settle his nerves.

Needless to say, everyone was immensely relieved that I was okay. I think I became a minor legend in my circles, as everyone asked me to recount my adventures over and over again. And of course, going forward, I made sure I had all the emergency information at my disposal whenever I traveled.

This is just one of my little railroad adventures. There are many more, but that is another story altogether.

Jason: Jade Snow is a magnificent character, so smart, sexy and fearless! She is such a real character, I think the reader gets a very strong sense for Jade and immediately likes her, will follow her anywhere. I think part of this, as well, is a sense of honesty. We feel we can trust Jade to tell it like it is! So if you would talk a little about what was involved with creating this character, a wonderful character that can really carry a long series, I think readers and writers alike will be fascinated by this.

Lada: I have to confess: I am very fond of Jade! I love her not only as one of my characters – my creation – but also as a person. You hit the nail on the head. She is smart, sexy and fearless. Yes, she is all that. But what’s more, she is absolutely and brutally honest. Not just with others, but with herself, which is a much more difficult thing to do. There are many ways we as humans indulge in self-deception. Jade wouldn’t have any of that.

There is an expression in Russian, which is normally reserved for males: “With him, I’d go into battle.” In this case I can honestly say, with Jade I’d easily go into battle. In other words, Jade can be absolutely trusted. With everything – from the world’s largest treasure to someone’s life. And that, together with her zest for life and passion, is an enormous part of her sex appeal. Even her little deceptions come from a higher place.

Several years back, when I was flying to Asia via Dubai, I met some international journalists returning from Afghanistan, who told me stories of their adventures. As I was boarding my plane, the image of Jade Snow, complete with her flaming hair and unusual blue-green eyes appeared before me. It occurred to me that this young, sassy , beautiful journalist would make an amazing heroine for the international adventure series. I soon started writing my first novel, STEPFORD USA, prequel to the Jade Snow International Adventure Series. In it, Jade, 28, gets stuck in an idyllic town in the Berkshires, MA, where she is supposed to take it easy before the birth of her child. But this little sheltered paradise is hiding a terrible secret, which Jade must uncover, risking her own and her unborn baby’s lives. Next I wrote a short novella, GREEN DESERT, describing Jade’s experience in Iraq, before the start of the series.

When I stumbled upon the story of the lost Russian Imperial Gold, I knew – this was to be Jade’s next adventure. Now that the series has taken off, the characters and stories write themselves.

I didn’t plan it to be first person narrative. I am a third person gal, generally. But it’s as if Jade insisted on telling the story herself – and there was nothing I could do about it! There is some of me in Jade (what writer can resist that!), and that’s why it’s so easy to write her.

Correction: I don’t really write her. She just tells me her story and I transcribe it on paper.

Jade Snow adventures continue! There are many more mysteries to solve, conspiracies to uncover and wrongs to right. There is also much happiness to find.

DRAGON GATE, the next adventure set in Asia, is coming in 2012.  More information is available at my official author website: http://www.LadaRay.com.

Jason: I think one thing that is a little confusing to Americans is the situation with the royal families in Russia. What was their lifestyle like, who were the major families, what is their current status, are they living abroad, etc. What were their houses like? I get the sense some of them were richly adorned palaces! Have you been in some of these, if so might you share your experience?

Lada: This is a very complex question and I’ll just scratch the surface with my brief answer. The lifestyle of the Russian royalty was very opulent and, as Lenin would put it, “they were very far from the people.” This is why the 1917 Revolution happened: the people, simply put, had had enough. World War I and its devastation had become the ultimate trigger.

Actually, some of the legendary Russian noble family names are mentioned in Gold Train. Although used fictitiously, as specified in the disclaimer, most are real historic names.

The Romanovs were of course the Imperial family. Prince Obolensky, Duchess Golitsina (sometimes the Dukes Golitsin would be referred to as Princes as well), Baron Vrangel, Count Vorontsov, Count Goncharov, Duke Menshikov (or Prince Menshikov) are all real historical names. Only Jade’s name – Countess Rosanova – is fictitious, as I wanted her to stand out and have her own identity.

Opulent ballroom at Catherine Palace, Pushkin, Saint Petersburg. Ballroom a little like this one is featured in Gold Train

Menshikov Palace on Neva Embankment, Saint Petersburg. In Gold Train, the Menshikov Mansion plays a prominent role and is owned by the oligarch, Yury Gurevich. Of course, the real Menshikov Palace is owned by the State and is a museum.

Please read more about the world of the Russian royalty in my upcoming article: Fact and Fiction in Gold Train, coming to Lada Ray Blog on May 6, 2012.

After the revolution, many of the royalty became part of the White Movement, some emigrated right away and others stayed, hoping the White army crushes the Bolsheviks and restores the monarchy. But this was not meant to be, and most of those who remained to fight the Bolsheviks ended up emigrating between 1918 and 1920.

This process was far from orderly. It was usually more like fleeing, boarding the last ship out or cramming into the last train, as the Bolsheviks gained and the Whites lost ground, and leaving everything behind in the process. Many ended up in Istanbul, Paris and even China penniless, forced to work at jobs far from glamorous – something they’ve never done in their lives – just to survive. For more on this, please watch the movies/read books I recommended earlier.

Meanwhile, those who had enough foresight, escaped with the family jewels (unless they had been robbed) or had foreign bank accounts and family connections to sustain them during their emigration.

The minority stayed in the Soviet Union and adjusted to their best ability. Some even thrived.

Presently, many former nobles live in the USA, France, Holland, UK and other Western European countries. Many have returned to Russia, which now welcomes them with open arms. Some of the events and aristocratic characters in GOLD TRAIN echo my own experiences. And although used fictitiously in the book, The Royal Society does exist in Russia.

It should be mentioned that most descendants of the noble houses of Russia are currently of very mixed blood, as described in Gold Train.

I’ve been to lots of palaces owned by the former Russian royalty. Extremely lavish and expansive, most are presently owned by the state and are museums, as well as various cultural establishments. The majority have been lovingly maintained during the Soviet days, but were somewhat neglected during the collapse of the Soviet Union. Recently, the new Russia again started heavily investing into maintaining its cultural heritage.

Jason: And finally, since my blog tour day will be May 1st, perhaps you could
explain May Day a little from a Russian perspective. Is it a big deal in
Russia? How is it celebrated, has it changed since the end of the Soviet
Union? Is there a Spring connection?

Lada: It is my pleasure to talk a little about May 1, or May Day – “Pervomay,” as it is traditionally called in Russian.

The Holiday, considered International Labor Day, is celebrated widely in Europe, China Latin America and of course, in Russia. During the Soviet days, every city and town would host massive parades and demonstrations. Each company or government office would rally its workers and their families. Nurseries and kindergartens would have Pervomay parties with kids dressing up and singing, dancing, performing. Oh yeah, kids also got showered with gifts, usually lots of candy and chocolates, both from their parents’ place of work and through their day care.

May Day party in my kindergarten. Me and my then boyfriend ;)

May Day shot of my kindergarten class after a performance. I am sitting in the first row, second from left. Poster on the right wall says: “World Peace.”

If you imagine it was all done under the barrel of a gun, think again. It was actually quite festive, and again, similar celebrations are common throughout Europe today, as this day is supposed to demonstrate the international solidarity of the workers. I was still very little when these mass parades, or demonstrations as they were called in the USSR, still took place.

I remember lots of red banners, colorful balloons and a sea of spring flowers. I also remember the incredible spring smell. I spent my childhood in Odessa, a southern city on the Black Sea, with gentle sun and breezes blowing from the bay, with lilac, jasmine and acacia trees in bloom. Russians love their flowers, and between bunches of tulips in people’s hands and blooming flowerbeds, trees and bushes, the whole city smelled like an enormous celebratory bouquet.

Every office or company carried their own insignia and banners to identify themselves and display their achievements. As with a lot of other kids, I’d usually have the best seat in the house, riding on my father’s shoulders. Uplifting music played everywhere, from live bands, trying to outdo each other, and from the loudspeakers installed on every corner. People would dance and sing on streets. The whole city turned into a massive, joyfully buzzing beehive. It was loads of fun.

Then, the country started slowly turning away from its socialist traditions and Pervomay demonstrations became smaller and smaller. When Gorbachev came to power, a lot of the old Soviet traditions were modified or eliminated.

The new generation, as we grew up, developed very different interests. As a linguist and translator, mine lay abroad, as I spent most of my time traveling while in college. In the late 1980s, I didn’t pay much attention to what was going on under my very nose, even though my friends and I would still often celebrate Pervomay as it was intended – in nature or somewhere on the beach. We would burn fires, bake potatoes, make shashlik (Russian shish kebob), and sing to the accompaniment of a guitar. I have to say, to this day I miss these outings. In 1991, I left the country permanently and finished my education abroad. Shortly thereafter, the Soviet Union had peacefully and quietly ceased to exist.

May, still a little cool. Us on the beach, Odessa

I have to say, that tomato and corn on the cob were delicious (homemade hot corn, straight from the stove and a perennial favorite treat for beach goers in Odessa, was sold by babushkas at the entrance to the beach… yum!)

Contemplating the meaning of life. More early beach in Odessa.

One fine day in the Caucasus mountains. Me and one very cute monkey ;)

Today as I understand, Pervomay is still celebrated in the Soviet fashion by Communist party members, which is the second most popular party in Russia after Putin’s ruling United Russia party.

The roots of the holiday are actually pagan. The indigenous pagan populations of Europe, including the continent’s largest Celtic and Rus cultures, celebrated May Day in nature, with lots of spring flowers, bonfires, music, dance and good food, to greet the beginning of the warm season. You can still see traces of this ancient holiday in, say, Ukrainian 19th century literature and Celtic legends. Today’s Wiccans celebrate this holiday, too.

But with the advent of the modern era and Christianity, these old traditions were forgotten. They were revived in the 19th century Europe, when it was decided to celebrate this day as International Workers Day. It was the time when the factory workers in Europe and USA were fighting for their rights.

And here is the shocker: The actual trigger to this newly revived holiday was the event in Chicago, USA, when during a factory strike, a number of American workers were killed as a result of a brutal crackdown, which happened – you’ve guessed it – on May 1. The workers in other countries decided to show solidarity with their “American brothers” by marking this day as International Workers’ Day. Isn’t it ironic that Labor Day in the USA, as opposed to the rest of the world, is now celebrated in September.

May Day is a national holiday not only in Russia today, but also in most of the world. In Russia everyone actually has April 30 and May 1 as official days off. May 8-9, Victory Day – another 2 days off. Some companies/offices have practically 2 weeks off, which they call May Holidays. Not bad! That’s in addition to country wide 10 days off for New Year/Russian Christmas: 12/31-1/10 and required by law 1 month vacation for all! Most Europeans have 24-36 day vacations AND many countries have additional 2 weeks period in August, when the whole country practically shuts down for a summer break. Compare that to American 2 weeks. Hmmm… Food for thought, especially on May Day.

Welcome to today’s stop along the GOLD TRAIN BLOG TOUR - not your usual blog tour! Check out other awesome stops and giveaways here.

My new mystery thriller set in Russia, GOLD TRAIN, is about a missing treasure: the entire Gold Reserve of the Russian Empire, which vanished during the 1918 Civil War. But it’s about to resurface… and it’s about to be used to shift the global balance of power.

The exciting and rip-roaring race for gold is set against the magnificent backdrop of historic Moscow and Saint Petersburg, where our heroine, Jade Snow, travels to reconnect with the country of her ancestors and to investigate tantalizing mystery of the Gold Train.

However, Jade gets much more than she bargained for, and amongst palaces and golden domes of Russia she finds not only the non-stop thrill ride, intrigue and deception, but also her fair share of the world’s most important treasures – not just the planet’s largest pile of gold and friendship, but also otherworldly love.

In this post I wanted to share the treasures of Russia, the country I love. Its riches are many. And I am not just talking about its gold reserve and Imperial jewels, although granted, these are quite impressive. Through its long and turbulent history the country produced lots of other equally magnificent treasures, be it in the area of art, science, literature, sport or architecture. I realize that today I can only scratch the surface of what is Russian culture and heritage. But even if I just succeed in giving you the flavor of Russia’s Treasures, I’ve already accomplished a lot.

Today, I’ll share a compilation of beautiful photos representing various facets of the Russian culture.

Without further ado,

RUSSIA and I

Guest post by Lada Ray

The Ancient Greeks would have you believe that one cannot step into the same river twice. Me — I dedicated my whole life to proving this dusty philosophical maxim.

When I was leaving Russia — very reluctantly — in 1991, the country was still called the Soviet Union, and if anyone at that time told me that the USSR’s days were numbered, I would’ve laughed in his face.

By the end of 1991, the Soviet Union broke up, quietly and amicably. I watched in disbelief from afar as, for the second time in a single century, Russia went through a revolution; thankfully, this time peacefully.

Next time I visited Russia during the turbulent 1990s, it was a completely different country, where safety nets and societal structures so solidly built and proudly maintained during Soviet times crumbled and ceased to exist. The new world emerged in birthing pains, while those who couldn’t adjust were mercilessly swept along the wayside. Crime was rampant and fortunes were built overnight, many by openly illegal means. A new class of Russian oligarchs emerged, while the needs of simple people were neglected.

It was an eye-opening and very sad visit. The country I remembered, the country where I spent some of the happiest days of my life, and the one so many took for granted, was gone. And I was hardly the only one who felt this way.

novodevichy-convent

Above: Novodevichy Convent, Moscow. A UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Although people in the West (due to biased media coverage and stereotypes they grew up with) would probably never understand this, many of us have fond memories growing up in the Soviet Union. Since the space in this post is limited, I won’t go into details (well, may be some other time). Suffice it to say that fond memories don’t happen out of the blue. They usually happen for a good reason, especially if such memories are shared by entire generations.

Food for thought…

But the situation in Russia started changing dramatically once Vladimir Putin came to power in the year 2000. The Russian economy, which was almost obliterated during the 1990s, came back strongly and has been growing by leaps and bounds for the past decade. The ongoing economic, financial, political, legal, military, police and social reforms completely changed Russia’s landscape.

red-square

A couple years back, I stumbled upon a documentary about the Gold Reserve of the Russian Empire, which vanished during the 1918 Russian Civil War. I immediately knew it was my book to write. But it took me two years to actually sit down and put the story on paper. I started writing GOLD TRAIN in July 2011. By August, I had a desperate urge to go and visit Russia.

So off I went. I spent three glorious weeks in Russia, stepping again into a completely different country and proving once more that the Ancient Greeks knew their philosophy.

Russia has changed, but at the same time managed to preserve its heritage. The new and the old learned to co-exist and complemented each other. Starbucks and McDonalds, Gucci and Armani, Mercedes and BMWs shared streets with the long-standing Russian tradition.

The new Russia clearly emerged, molded out of past suffering and lessons learned. And although there is still plenty that needs to be done, one definitely gets the feeling that there is stability, that the country is on the right track and looking forward to its future.

I was so inspired by my trip that the story of GOLD TRAIN and Jade Snow’s Russian Adventure materialized on my computer as if by magic. I hope that I was able to convey in my book the complex feelings and impressions about Russia’s past, present…and future.

GOLD TRAIN was released as an eBook on December 19, 2011. The print version is scheduled for release on April 25, 2012. This year I will also release my new fantasy thriller, THE EARTH SHIFTER, which takes place in Moscow and Siberia.

Jade Snow: Savior or Seductress

GOLD TRAIN GIVEAWAY: Please leave a comment to be entered to win a GOLD TRAIN ebook on 5/6, including the *required info! What is the required info? See here!

Jade Snow is the protagonist of the Jade Snow International Adventure Series and of GOLD TRAIN, a gripping mystery thriller set in Russia and based on true historic events.

At 30, Jade is a seasoned international journalist, who sacrificed her career for marriage and to raise her thirteen-month old daughter Lara. But this is all about to change as her life takes an unexpectedly dramatic turn.

When Jade learns about the old mystery surrounding the missing Gold Reserve of the Russian Empire, she jumps at the chance to restart her journalistic career which ground to a screeching halt after she got pregnant. She also hopes to reconnect with the country of her ancestors. Barely 24 hours after her arrival to Moscow, Jade’s only Russian friend gets brutally murdered, while Jade finds herself embroiled in a web of lies, intrigue, glamour and alien ideals. As she lands in the midst of a conspiracy threatening to overthrow the Russian government, she must stay ahead of her adversaries, knowing that one mistake may cause a civil war and upset the delicate balance of power in the world. And along the way, she meets a mysterious stranger who will change her own world forever.

Several years back, when I was flying to Asia via Dubai, I met some international journalists returning from Afghanistan, who told me stories of their adventures. As I was boarding my plane, the image of Jade Snow, complete with her flaming hair and unusual blue-green eyes, appeared before me. It occurred to me that this young, smart, fearless and beautiful journalist, who had mastered to perfection the art of being in the wrong place at the right time, would make an amazing heroine for the international adventure series.

I soon started writing my first novel, STEPFORD, USA, prequel to the Jade Snow International Adventure Series. In it, Jade, 28, gets stuck in an idyllic town in the Berkshires, MA, where she is supposed to take it easy before the birth of her child. But this little sheltered paradise is hiding a terrible secret which Jade must uncover, risking her own and her unborn baby’s lives.

Next, I wrote a short novella, GREEN DESERT, describing Jade’s riveting experience in Iraq before the start of the series. And when I stumbled upon the story of the lost Russian Imperial gold, I knew – this was to be Jade’s next adventure!

Jade Snow could have any man for the asking. But she is not content with easy happiness she could have as wife and mom. The role of a little woman is not for her, and she must find adventure wherever she goes.

In each book of the series, Jade will encounter a mystery to solve, a devastating conspiracy to uncover and someone to save, be it a wrongfully convicted man, a small Asian village, or the world entire. And in each story, she is faced with excruciatingly dramatic choices about her own love and happiness.

I’d like to give a few examples of what various reviewers say about Jade in order to illustrate a certain controversial subject. And before you decide that it’s boring… Trust me, I am trying to make a point here, so just bear with me!

“Jade… is the real treat. She does not have super powers, nor even any formal training in the spy business, but she is daring, and clever, and her heart is always in the right place.”

“Jade Snow is to journalism, what Jason Bourne is to action and espionage. The author has managed to develop a character with a fascinating thoughtful purpose… [she] goes beyond the obvious and whisks us along into the heart-stopping world of Jade Snow with breath-taking appeal for the next paragraph and page.”

“I was love struck with the interaction between the characters, how well they work together, complimenting one another to solve the mystery. Jade Snow is a very intuitive, resourceful, quick thinking, witty heroine…”

“The protagonist, Jade Snow is a strong, independent journalist with international appeal. Her intuition, ability to reason and deductive prowess rivals the great Sherlock Holmes.”

The above are all examples of five star reviews, two from male and two from female reviewers. I’ve been blessed with a number of five star reviews, which all bring up excellent points and for which I am immensely grateful.

Another reviewer, who gives GOLD TRAIN four stars, says this:

“Jade is a bright likeable character. She is educated and good at connecting the dots. While she has no training as a detective, her inquisitive mind and investigative reporting skills find her entwined in the mystery. I loved Jade the detective, but struggled to like Jade the person. While on this adventure she strays and breaks her marriage vows. [!] Call me old fashioned, but this doesn’t sit well with me; even though the romance was passionate and Jade felt he was her soul mate. I realize this won’t affect everyone, so do not let this deter you from a great adventure.”

I thank this reviewer for her frank opinion and for a thorough, generally positive review. About Jade “straying, while in Russia.” I am old fashioned too, at least on this count, but my character doesn’t have to be. And I have just one question. What if she were a male? Do we still have double standards when it comes to these issues? If you read the book, dear reader, you’ll know exactly why I ask this question.

And then, there is this:

“I however, did not like the fact that Jade jumps into bed with Alexei immediately, without a second thought to the loving husband and her daughter waiting for her back home.” [?] This is from a three star review by a male reviewer from Mumbai, India.

Ha? Jade jumps into bed immediately? Of course, all her hesitations and feelings of guilt throughout the whole book don’t count, right? And I don’t know about you, but I don’t know too many people who would think about their children right before making passionate love. In fact, this is usually the last thing on someone’s mind in such circumstances.

“If Jade was a real person, I wouldn’t like her. I wouldn’t care what happened to her.” [!] This is from a three star review by Mark Lee, Masquerade Crew (Alabama, USA). This reviewer also confesses in his review that he’s never been outside of North America.

Hmmm… I don’t even know what to say here except this.

Imagine… Jade is freezing to death on a cold, wind swept night street in St. Petersburg, Russia with nowhere to go. Her only Russian friend has just been murdered. She also just found out that the only other two people she knows in Russia are not at all what they seem. She’s been betrayed by the very people she used to trust, people who want to use her as a pawn in their twisted high stakes games. And that’s when she gets rescued by a handsome stranger. She is offered lots of wine and vodka, which she gladly accepts, both to warm up and to numb her mind after the terrible shocks she’d experienced. And the stranger she is with is handsome and sexy beyond imagination. What follows is not a one-night stand, but a relationship literally made in heaven – the kind both men and women dream about their entire lives! Yet, it is a relationship that’s not meant to be, or at least the one that is not going to be easy.

I realize, it is very hard to imagine the freezing cold, drama and betrayal, all the loneliness and confusion of a woman alone in the unfamiliar country, if you are a male leisurely reading this book on a warm couch in Alabama, or in the tropical heat of Mumbai – but try! Make an effort! And maybe, just maybe, you’ll see what I see.

So, who is Jade Snow? Is she a savior or seductress?

Jade is not your usual female character. She is strong, smart, quick thinking and witty, with broad international appeal. Fully at home in the brave, new globalized world, she is also human and there is a certain vulnerability about her, as she searches for her personal happiness. Blessed with exceptional good looks and plenty of sex appeal, she can sweep any man off his feet. But she is absolutely and brutally honest. “Crystally honest,” as they would say in Russia. Not just with the others, but also with herself, which is a much more difficult thing to do.

She would only be with the man who is her soul mate, even if it means breaking her marriage vows. She will never lie to herself, but she can sacrifice her own happiness, if to achieve it, she has to break other people’s hearts.

As they would say in the old country, “The girl likes her happiness the hard way.”

I have to confess: I adore Jade, not only as one of my characters – my creation – but also as a person. And I am very proud of how she acts in the most crucial moments of her life. Sometimes she even manages to surprise me – very pleasantly so. Her dramatic life has thrown her more than her share of loss and curveballs, and she’s been known to pass her heart-wrenching tests with flying colors, while at the same time managing to preserve her witty sense of humor. And because of her attitudes and lessons learned, somewhere along the way, she finds the rainbow… when she least expects it.

I can’t emphasize enough how much our contemporary literature needs the smart and strong female characters and role models who are also real, genuine people. And how much we need more people with intelligence, courage and heart in our everyday lives! In the new world of the 21 century, we have to learn to live and work together, regardless of prejudices and borders, to understand each other and help those in need, whether it is by saving a stranger’s life, averting global disaster, or by a simple act of random kindness.

The next Jade Snow adventure will take place in Asia. There are many more mysteries to solve, conspiracies to uncover, and yes, happiness to find!

Dear readers, see you on pages of my books, where Jade and I promise you a non-stop thrilling ride with heart!

BIO:

I’ve loved all the varied and exotic things I’ve done in life, but writing is by far my biggest love affair and most exciting adventure. Can’t wait to share it… See you on pages of my books!

Lada Ray is a writer, internationally certified feng shui master practitioner, world traveler, linguist, financial consultant & investor, nature/animal lover and spirituality & metaphysics researcher.

Born in Russia, Lada always wanted to write cool stories, which she’d been imagining in her head ever since she can remember. Instead, she listened to her well-meaning parents and started her life in a more traditional way (for her, that is.)

Lada holds a Master’s Degree in comparative linguistics (graduated summa cum laude,) is fluent in several languages and has traveled to over twenty six countries (she stopped counting after 26) in Europe, Asia, North and South America, as well as Africa. She had worked in Havana, Cuba as an interpreter for the Russian educational exchange delegations, including a couple of interviews with the man himself – Fidel Castro.

In the USA, she published articles in the Hartford Courant & taught Russian on cable TV. Then, something inexplicable possessed her to work as a financial consultant for AIG and Smith Barney/Citigroup.

But later, she came back to her senses and quit the corporate world to pursue her dreams. She traveled to Asia to study with the revered Hong Kong Masters of Feng Shui and obtained her International Master’s Certification (graduated first in class) with Lillian Too, world-renowned feng shui author and teacher. For years, Lada operated an extensive feng shui website and blog – a hit with both local and worldwide fans – and authored over thirty articles on feng shui and spirituality for her own website, as well as for the World of Feng Shui and other international publications. At the same time, she taught her proprietary feng shui courses and did public speaking.

Lada imagines her stories in bustling New York City and beautifully serene Catskill Mountains, where she lives with her family and gorgeous calico cat Lily.

Lada Ray is the author of:

~GOLD TRAIN, gripping mystery/thriller set in Russia and based on true historic events (Jade Snow Russia Adventure)

~STEPFORD USA, a small town psychological mystery/thriller (Jade Snow Prequel)

~Green Desert, a riveting story set in Iraq (A Jade Snow Novella)

Coming in 2012:

~The Earth Shifter, new YA fantasy/thriller, set in Russia (Moscow & Siberia,) US, China and other mythical locales of this surreal Blue Planet

~Dragon Gate, next Jade Snow Adventure, set in Asia

Russia will be voting for the country’s new president on Sunday, March 4, 2012.

Because of the Russian electoral rules, one cannot use poll numbers several days before the elections. Currently in effect: moratorium on promoting specific candidates to avoid influencing the voters.

As a reminder to my readers, I do not belong to any political party and consider myself a political atheist. My analysis is based on observation, logic, intuition and the Ancient Chinese System of Long Cycles (CSLC).

The Russian political scene is changing rapidly as a record number of citizens take part in protests and demonstrations, both for and against various candidates. Historically speaking, this level of activism is unusual for Russia. Well, apart from the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution and the 1990-93 USSR dissolution period. Most other times in Russian history, the population wasn’t that active politically.

Russian protests differ substantially from the Arab Spring, US Occupy movement, Greek, Spanish, British and other European protests, because they are NOT economically driven. Russians have not experienced a cut in pay or unemployment. In fact, salaries and standard of living have been steadily and substantially rising for the past decade. This activism is driven by a desire to see more change, better and faster reforms, as well as ‘the Putin fatigue.’ As one commentator put it, “It’s media fatigue: people are tired of seeing Putin’s face all over the news.”

I do want to point out that my analysis, based on CSLC, indicates that social and political activism around the world will keep intensifying during this decade. This is true not only for Russia, but for the vast majority of countries, including most of Europe, USA, the Middle East and Asia, as well as – perhaps, to a lesser degree – Latin America, Africa and Australia.

Due to allegations of fraud and ballot stuffing during 2011 Duma (Russian Parliament) elections, over 30,000 Russians have signed up to be anti-fraud monitors during Presidential elections on March 4, 2012.

This year, 5 candidates are eligible to run for the Russian presidency. The remaining contenders were unable to collect the number of signatures required to run.

The winning candidate must receive over 50% of the popular vote or face second round run-off against 2nd place candidate.

CANDIDATES:

Vladimir Putin (Center: Ruling United Russia Party).

Russian President, 2000-2008. Current Prime Minister of the Russian Federation. Still, by far the most popular politician in Russia. United Russia had suffered a substantial “defeat” during 2011 Duma elections. Well, if you consider a defeat getting 49.5% of the votes. But it was a step down from their usual 60-70% approval rate. Besides, they needed 50% in order to maintain a constitutional majority in the Duma. In that sense, the result was quite disappointing.

Putin may have lost some of his support among the more affluent population of Moscow, who ironically benefited most from his and United Russia policies in the past 12 years. But he gained support in the Russian regions. He’s widely projected to win, even by his opponents and detractors. Putin is very feared by the U.S. and some other Western governments, yet supported by most world governments, as well as the international investment community. International investors, as well as the Russian majority, seek stability. And they know, Putin is the only one who can deliver that.

For Putin, it is not as much the issue of winning. It is more how he wins. He needs clean, beyond reproach elections; and a win in the first round to avoid compromising his substantial clout in Russia and abroad.

Vladimir Zhirinovsky (Right/Nationalist: Liberal Democrats).

Speaker of the lower house of the Duma. An old timer in the Russian politics who’s been around since Yeltsin; may have lost some of his original base, but is still popular amongst the young males, especially in the Russian regions. Famous for his loud and often scandalous speeches and behavior, Zhirinovsky enjoys a staunch support base because he often says what others don’t dare due to political correctness.

Gennady Zyuganov (Far left: Communist Party).

The Communists have enjoyed a substantial increase in support in the past year. Nostalgia for the good, old Soviet Union days and low pensions for retirees have aided in Zyuganov’s popularity. Communist party is a very hands-on grassroots organization, members of which go door to door and help each other, as well as the needy, according to the old Soviet tradition. Which also explains the rise in popularity.

Party’s weakness: the Communists have never been good at accounting. To this day, it’s unclear where the money for all the social reforms they are proposing (essentially, the rollback to the Soviet Union) will come from.

Sergey Mironov (Center Left: Fair Russia Party, aka, A Just Russia Party).

Chairman of the Russian Federation Council 2001 – 2011, the Upper House of the Duma. Fair Russia Party has appeal among those voters who are not quite communists, but who would like more social security and government controls. Also, among those who are not quite center.

Mironov has repeatedly proposed an amendment to the Russian constitution that would allow the President to be elected for 3 consecutive 5 or 7 year terms. In 2007, Boris Gryzlov, leader of the rival United Russia party, said that changing the constitution would be unacceptable. Mironov is considered to be more socialism oriented, as he wants to set up special agricultural exchanges for state purchases of agricultural goods and introduce government intervention in regulating prices of basic food stuffs.

Mikhail Prokhorov (Independent).

Russian oligarch, billionaire, Forbes 400, Owner of the NY Mets. The only candidate not backed by a party. He commands quite a presence and towers over everyone in the room at close to 7′ of height. Prokhorov has a pro-business platform and enjoys some support among the rich, the business people and the affluent. Most likely, a negligible factor in these elections.

Based on the current dynamic situation, I will be upgrading my Year 2012 Predictions for the Russian elections. Read an update tomorrow – right here, on Lada Ray Blog.
